MARTHA D. SAUNDERS, PRESIDENT
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
(April 14, 2008) The Boys are Back in Town “Things Change, Things Stay the Same” When it comes to the USM circle of
influence, little has changed since the administration of former USM President, Shelby Thames. So little has changed, it
seems, that former MGT & MKT chair, Barry Babin’s research phrase – “Things Change, Things Stay the Same” – seems
appropriate for describing the ushering in of USM’s latest era under first-year President Martha Saunders (shown below).
(April 20, 2008) And days later . . . From the President’s Blog:... Madame President, if you are going to raise important
issues (and you should), you should follow through and discuss or answer the questions raised; otherwise, what is the
point? Simply mentioning issues in passing does not make you sound like you are in control and working hard for the
University; it makes you look like you are between chili judging contests and sporting events to mention on your sorority
update blog.
(April 25, 2008) GH Chatter Predictions are circulating around Greene Hall that Lance Nail and Glenn Pittman are
frontrunners for the CoB Dean’s job. However, talk in the hall is that President Saunders will go with the younger Nail.
(April 24, 2008) CoB News, 24 April 2008 Google Scholar Citations Sluggers The Google Scholars citations analyses here
at USMNEWS.NET usually make for some of our more popular reports. For those of you who have recently ventured out
into GS-land, you may have noticed that Google has been working on implementing an upgrade to that engine. No group
is more excited about that than USMNEWS.NET’s reporters. While we await that, there are some additional elements of
research quality in the CoB to consider.
(April 24, 2008) CoB News, 24 April 2008 Long distance readers of USMNEWS.NET are often interested in news
regarding other areas of USM. In this issue, our reporters provide some of the latest. Saunders Leaves Behind a Physical
Plant Disaster at UW – Whitewater In a recent update to The Chronicle of Higher Education – Online entitled “No Hot
Water or Heat at U. Wisconsin at Whitewater After a Boiler Explosion,” reporter Scott Carlson writes that “. . . a backup
boiler [at UW – Whitewater] blew up [during routine maintenance] after gas built up and ignited.” The explosion, in
which “one person was injured . . ., damaged both the backup boiler and the main boiler,” and also “scattered asbestos
around the blast site.”
(May 1, 2008) Just Who Does Southern Miss’ CoB Think It Is? Part 10 Former USM President, Shelby F. Thames, was fond
of referring to USM's faculty and programs as being of "world class" stature. He said it early, and he said it often, while
serving as the top executive of the now 98 year old from 2002-2007.
(May 5, 2008) CoB News, 6 May 2008 Aunt Martha's "Banner Year" USM President, Martha Saunders, stood before USM
faculty, staff and students, along with local media, at the University's Fall 2007 Convocation and proclaimed that USM's
athletics would be producing a banner year during 2007-08. How has Saunders' proclamation stood up to the test of time?
If Table 1 below is any indication, not so well.
