(February 14, 2008) Special Report A Booze Accounting USM Alcohol Problems Increase During Saunders' First Year
Data released recently by the USM Police Department (USMPD) indicates that the number of liquor law violations on
the USM campus increased dramatically during 2007, USM President Martha Saunders' first year at the helm.
According to Erica Sherrill Owens' story for The Student Printz entitled "Alcohol related arrests increase," the USMPD
reported 176 liquor law violations in 2007, compared to just 75 in 2006, representing an increase of 135% over that time
period.
(February 14, 2008) 31st & Pearl Bloggedy . . . Blog . . Blog To be sure, the gulf between Saunders' and former President
Shelby Thames' academic credentials knows no end. That Saunders' administrative prowess lacks the skill and polish
of another former USM President, Aubrey Lucas, is an understatement. And, nothing to date indicates that Saunders
will fight the powers with anything similar to the zeal in doing so shown by Horace Fleming, yet another former USM
chief. More and more it seems as though USM went and hired another prez and all we got is this d#*n blog! (Sound like
a good idea for a t-shirt?)
(February 18, 2008) Special Report College & University Presidents Who Blog An Examination of the Quality of
Institutions Involved USM President Martha D. Saunders' blog continues to draw the interest of our readers here at
USMNEWS.NET. More than one has asked about other college and university presidents who blog. Bob Johnson's Blog
on Internet Marketing has conducted just such a survey, and it reports that there are 34 college and university
presidents who blog. These are listed below, along with U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2008
"Tier" designation for those institutions that are considered "national universities" by this reference source.
(February 21, 2008) It’s the Thought that Counts Comparing USM President Martha Saunders’ Blog to Those of Her
Peers A report posted to USMNEWS.NET in recent days focuses on the 34 university and college presidents who
currently blog on a periodic basis. That report showed that only a handful of the “national universities” catalogued in
U.S. News & World Report’s best institutions guidebook (2008) have top executives who participate in the blogosphere.
One of those is, of course, USM’s own Martha Saunders. This document compares the quality of Saunders’ periodic
blog to those produced by the presidents of other Tier II, III and IV (national) universities. We begin with the

(February 27, 2008) 31st & Pearl CoB’s Image Gets Pasterized USM President Martha Saunders made it crystal clear (in
a recent “President’s Message” installment) that USM’s image is her #1 priority as chief executive. As a marketing
professor, image has been Interim Dean Alvin Williams’ primary concern for the CoB since taking over from former
CoB Dean Harold Doty on 10 April 2007. However, their image management performances have been so poor lately
that they are either being disingenuous about the goal or they are not the sharpest tacks in the drawer when it comes to
public relations.
