Reports from various national news media indicate that the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster is now threatening the Florida panhandle. The first area in jeopardy is said to be Pensacola Beach, the “favorite place,” outside of the Pine Belt, of USM president Martha Saunders, at least according to her May-2010 “Q&A” with Signature Magazine (see insert below).

This report examines how Saunders has been managing, or as the data below suggest, mismanaging, athletics at USM. The numbers in Table 1 below make the case that USM’s sports program has been floundering since Saunders’ arrival back in spring of 2007. The overall win percentage for all sports from 2007-08 through 2009-10 is a paltry 49.0%.
