NAMED PROFESSORSHIPS
(February 1, 2009) Winning the Brandt Award — A Boon or a Curse? A number of reports have popped up at
USMNEWS.net of late setting the stage for the CoB's 2009 Louis K. Brandt Research Award. That award, which will
be presented in just a few weeks at the CoB's spring awards banquet, is expected to go to associate professor of
decision sciences Fujun Lai.
(February 24, 2009) Missing & Musical Professorships What Happened to the Williams & Parham-Bridges, and
Who Should Hold Them? The CoB has a few professorships. The list includes (1) the Morgan Distinguished
Professorship in Accounting, (2) the Draughn Distinguished Professorship in Healthcare Marketing, (3) the
McCarty Distinguished Professorship in Information Systems, and (4) the Kaetsu Distinguished Professorship in
International Business. Not included among this list are the Williams Distinguished Professorship in Minority
Entrepreneurship and the Parham-Bridges Distinguished Professorship in Real Estate. These two are omitted from
the list of four above not because they aren't funded. No, they have been funded, and in the case of the
Parham-Bridges, the funding is substantial and it has been around (i.e., in the USM Foundation) for quite some
time.
(April 22, 2009) Breaking News Fujun Lai Wins 2009 Brandt Award LONG BEACH – Associate professor of
decision sciences (DS), Fujun Lai, has been named the winner of the CoB’s 2009 Louis K. Brandt Award. As stated
in CoB dean Lance Nail’s 21-April-09 e-mail to CoB faculty, the LKBA is a biennial award recognizing the CoB
faculty with the most significant contributions to scholarship over the previous two years. As pointed out by
USMNEWS.net on earlier occasions, the 2009 LKBA is based on scholarly contributions over the period 2007-08.
(May 20, 2009) Ghosts, Professorships, & Ghost Professorships It's Time to Know What Happened to the
Parham-Bridges & Williams Over the last few days, readers of USMNEWS.net have been treated to reports and
editorials discussing various CoB faculty "ghosts," a term used to describe those CoB faculty who are seldom seen
in the corridors of Joseph A. Greene Hall. Everyone knows who these figures are – Mark Klinedinst, John Clark,
Farooq Malik, etc. Other reports and editorials have discussed who should hold each professorship, from whether
or not the McCarty Distinguished Professorship in MIS should be taken from Chang-Tseh Hsieh and given to
Fujun Lai, to whether or not the Morgan Distinguished Professorship in Accounting should still be retained by
Roderick Posey.
(August 26, 2009) CoB News, 26 August 2009 Horne LLP Partners & Associates Endow ACC Professorship The
CoB's School of Accountancy has received pledges towards its second professorship. This professorship comes via
Horne LLP partners and associates, and it will be referred to as the Horne LLP Endowed Professorship in
Accounting.
(November 9, 2009) GH Chatter The recent stories about former CoBer Alvin Williams reminded some of the new
Alvin J. Williams Distinguished Professorship in Minority Entrepreneurship. One would have to assume that this
new (2008) professorship was born underwater and may not be filled any time soon. As for another, long-lost CoB
professorship, look for news of a new (first ever, really) holder some time in the months ahead.
