Broken Priorities "'You see it on every campus-an increase in administration and a decrease in full-time faculty, and an increase in the use of part-time faculty,' he [Scott Carlson] said. With that trend, along with rising tuition and falling state support, 'you're painting a pretty fair picture of higher ed,' he continued. 'It's not what it should be. What's broken in higher ed is the priorities, and it's been broken for a long time.'" Administrator Hiring Drove 28% Boom in Higher-Ed Work Force, Report Says By Scott Carlson

Dear usmnews.net, Your recent report about Mary Anderson's lack of publications has raised issues that I am sure she wishes were buried and forgotten. For those who may not remember, several years ago Mary Anderson claimed an impressive Accounting Horizons pub (A-level).

Updated 2-March-2016 HELP WANTED A Look at Business Dean Openings from Around the Country With four current/former CoB deans moving around in the academic world, some USMNEWS.net readers have requested an ongoing report that tracks curre nt b-school dean openings. Long-time readers of USMNEWS.net are aware that Faye Gilbert is the current dean of the CoB. Another former CoB administrator, Farhang Niroomand, currently holds the dean’s post at the University of Houston – Victoria. Each of these is listed among all southern university/college business deans in USMNEWS.net’s series on deans’ salaries entitled The BSD Pay Project. The BSD Pay Project can be found using the Google search bar located here at USMNEWS.net. That reports notes that Gilbert is currently earning $233,300 per year, while Niroomand earns $193,217 per year.

Updated 2-March-2016 The CoB’s Brain Drain Compilation, 2003-Present An Illustrated Account There is little argument with the notion that the College of Business at USM has been severely diminished by the faculty flight that has occurred since former CoB dean, Harold Doty, assumed the reins of management. Doty’s tenure began in 2003, when he was hired by former USM President, Shelby Thames, to lead the newly reorganized College of Business & Economic Development. It ended in April of 2007, just after the CoB had received an ominous report from the AACSB requiring a 6th Year Maintenance of Accreditation Review, when Doty and his associate dean, Farhang Niroomand, “resigned” amidst suspicion and speculation.

A Walk Through the History of Southern Miss Part 7 usmnews.net continues a new series revisiting nationally embarrassing events in the history of Southern Miss. As faculty, are your email communications private? At Southern Miss, the answer is no. What is the impact on academic freedom? While usmnews.net will not attempt to answer this question for everyone, many faculty tell our reporters and editors that they are "afraid" to use Southern Miss email accounts for any communications which administrators might find objectionable.

A Walk Through the History of Southern Miss Part 8 usmnews.net continues a new series revisiting nationally embarrassing events in the history of Southern Miss. The incident we address today is not merely embarrassing, it is disgusting and despicable. During the late 1950's, Aubrey K. Lucas was the Director of Admissions at Mississippi Southern College, later named the University of Southern Mississippi, when Mr. Clyde Kennard applied for admission.

An increasing number of anonymous reports have pointed to an uptick in on campus mobbing at Southern Miss. As a matter of public interest, usmnews.net will republish articles about this troublesome topic. If you believe you are a victim, you probably are. How Do You Know If You Are The Target Of A Mobbing? Over the next few days usmnews.net will publish excerpts from an excellent article published in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Mob Rule: In departmental disputes, professors can act just like animals, John Gravois, http://chronicle.com, Section: The Faculty, Volume 52, Issue 32, Page A10.

March 10, 2016
Dear usmnews.net, Thanks for revisiting Southern Miss' history of mobbing. Word on campus is that the situation is worse now than it was in Saunders' darkest days. People have been subjected to very public verbal assaults (the proverbial "F-bomb"), huge amounts of turnover in some offices because of the abusive atmosphere, administrators fired for no reason and replaced with cronies, and on and on.

March 15, 2016
Dear usmnews.net,Thank you for loaning me your copy of Dr. Bennett's dissertation. After reading it, I can't help but question whether Dr. Bennett's dissertation meets the standards for a doctoral dissertation at any respectable university. Having reviewed this dissertation it is easy to understand Dr. Bennett's focus on retention and credentialing. A doctorate supported by an unpublished and, in my opinion unpublishable, dissertation supported his road to the position of president of Southern Miss.

The administrator was Farhang Niroomand. I Will Never Be Alone Behind Closed Doors With An Administrator At USM Ever Again. "He [Farhang Niroomand] was very agitated. He was very red faced. And I remember him pointing his finger at me and saying, "I ought to kick your ass." At that moment, I said I will never be alone behind closed doors with an administrator at USM ever again.

Reprinted by request -- FEELING SAFE AT USM FEELING SAFE AT USM Readers have questioned whether violent and threatening conduct really occurs at the College of Business. Many outsiders find it difficult to believe that such a hateful atmosphere could be created or tolerated. Therefore, usmnews.net's reporters are reviewing sworn testimony relating to acts of hostility and threatening behavior in the CoB. In each case, the conduct was ignored, and by being ignored, was promoted at USM. usmnews.net continues the reports with an excerpt from an affidavit filed in Federal Court: "an incident of no consequence" ... On September 28, 2007, less than twenty four hours after I offered sworn testimony before Judge Keith Starrett pertaining to a motion for temporary restraining order filed by Dr. Chauncey M. DePree, Jr., I was accosted and threatened by D. Harold Doty, who is a Defendant in the action filed by Dr. DePree.

One of the most common questions heard by usmnews.net -- Dear usmnews.net, I looked at WorldCat's Dissertations and found this: The impact of selective factors related to completing the Doctor of Arts degree at Middle Tennessee State University / Rodney D Bennett 1996 English Book : Thesis/dissertation/manuscript Archival Material xi, 113 leaves ; 28 cm. The only copy is owned by the TSU library. You might want to look at Cook Library's Dissertations and Theses and see if the full text is available. May 6, 2016
Dear usmnews.net, Recently, while looking through a box of old college memorabilia, I found the legal documentation associated with my dealings with D Harold Doty at the University of ****** in the early ****s. This made me want to research the jerk and I came upon your articles associated with him. I would love to say I was shocked but I am not. Honestly, I hadn't really thought of him or that situation in almost 20 years. Your articles did, however, give further validation to my arguments as to why I did not want him to be my academic advisor.

Dear usmnews.net, I read the newspaper report about former Dean Lance Nail. I guess TTU doesn't cover for their administrators as much as USM does. Name withheld by request / Dear usmnews.net, According to KCBD [TV] Dr. Nail claims "... the investigation is not entirely accurate." I would love to hear Lance's explanation of what part of this lurid, disgusting story is not accurate?

More on the Nail/Parisi Story From the Alabama Side of the Equation KCBD TV is now reporting that Dr. Franco Parisi, at the center of a Title IX, sexual harassment investigation is no longer teaching at the University of Alabama. The report goes on to say that "[t]his season, Kentucky and LSU are paying a combined $1.15 million to host the Golden Eagles." C'mon Jason. This is nothing of which to be proud. These aren't really even football games. They are bought and paid for beatings for cash.

Dear usmnews.net, The links to the Arkansas stories about (former USM Provost) Tim Hudson were interesting. As an old timer, I have to say it doesn't come as much of a surprise. Niroomand looking to escape Texas? A few days ago, a reader drew our attention to a potential attempt by Harold Doty to escape Texas. More recently, we were advised that Farhang Niroomand, former associate dean at Southern Miss and current dean of University of Houston -- Victoria was also looking to move on. We trust the faculty at Waukesha will inquire about Niroomand's history of threatening and bullying faculty.

On February 12, 2017, usmnews.net received news that Niroomand is one of 4 finalists for the dean's opening at Marshall University. His campus interview there was last week. They hope to name a winner this coming week. Sources in Houston had previously reported that Niroomand was looking to relocate from his job as Dean at UH-Victoria before he was invited to leave. This notion was reinforced by the following email.
