Dear usmnews.net, Like many readers, I have watched the unfolding Galaxy Tax™ scandal at Southern Miss. As I recall, when this disaster was first announced, this past fall, usmnews.net was receiving and publishing reports and comments warning about the problems. I have to say that Dr. Saunders' denial of any culpability in the mess is, at best, disingenuous. Who does she think she is kidding?

The Farm News Briefs from Southern Miss 13-December-2011 Is Martha Spending Your Christmas Money? Pockets of the USM campus are buzzing about the new holiday commercial that USM is now running on CNBC and (possibly) other cable television networks. The 30-second spot is linked above, though there is also a 1-minute version that is available via YouTube. The commercial shows a number of USM students, singing Christmas songs, who come to the front door of the USM president’s mansion. cookies and sharing in the holiday cheer.

A NEW KIND OF DEAN Katherine Mangan recently wrote a news story for The Chronicle of Higher Education entitled "Business Schools are Hiring a New Kind of Dean." In the first paragraph she states, "Faced with stagnant enrollment, pressure to expand overseas, and the demands of recruiters for more-relevant training, business schools today are searching for a new kind of dean: one who has broad leadership skills rather than narrow expertise in areas like economics or finance, according to a new report."

How Many USM Students Are Attending the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl? It's not hard to see that USM is conducting an all out public relations blitz over the past couple of weeks to gloss over what sources have characterized as boneheadedly stupid decisions on the part of USM administrators.

That tip refers to USM’s associate dean of students, Brooks Moore.

Saunders Talks ED, USM Family Wants HC USM president Martha Saun- ders stated the obvious when she told the Associated Press that Mississippi universities could help bring jobs to their host cities by getting involved in company recruitment efforts.

Ellis Johnson Expected to be Named New HC at USM HATTIESBURG – According to ESPN’s Chris Low, South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson will become USM’s new head football coach, succeeding Larry Fedora, who will depart Hattiesburg on 25-Dec-2011 in order to take the reins at North Carolina. Johnson, who reportedly earns $750,000 per year at SC, is widely recognized as one of the better defensive minds in the country.

It’s Ellis HATTIESBURG – USM president Martha Saunders made it official at a press conference on USM’s campus at 4pm (CST) on 20-Dec-2011 when she named South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson to succeed outgoing USM head football coach Larry Fedora. Johnson, who turns 60 on 23-Dec-2011, joined Saunders and his wife, Caroline, on the podium for the announcement.
