As of 2009, The Chronicle of Higher Education, reported that USM had one of the "biggest increases" in the nation in "growth in managers and support personnel relative to enrollment.": 84%. USM Reports Devastating Potential NCAA Violation According to the Bleacher Report, the NCAA has announced that Southern Miss is under investigation for "... how tuition, living expenses and other fees were paid for "Prop 48" recruits who signed with the Golden Eagles but were academically ineligible out of high school or junior college." What are "Prop 48" recruits? According to Sporting News, Prop 48 ... is an NCAA regulation that sets a standard for athletic eligibility based on a prospective student-athlete's grades.

Guest Editorial Defining the Problem Let's begin today's report with the question raised at the end of yesterday's report, USM Reports Devastating Potential NCAA Violation: "How do academic institutions have any claim to ethical conduct or integrity, if this behavior 'happens everywhere'?" The short answer is many academic institutions have no claim to ethical conduct or integrity. Unfortunately, the University of Southern Mississippi is numbered among those schools that fall short of claims to ethical conduct or integrity.

Dear usmnews.net, Word around campus is that Southern Miss is taking the [alleged] violations of NCAA rules more seriously than anyone is letting on. Southern Miss just put The Lightfoot Law firm on the payroll to defend it against the claims. If your readers never heard of the Birmingham, AL based firm, it is the one that Texas A&M hired to keep Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel eligible.
