He's a busy little guy! We get many visitors who look for
reports specifically about Harold Doty. Many. If you
haven't seen his video-don't know how you missed it-it's
on the front page here at usmnews.net. You really should
listen to it. It is rich. As one reader put it, "Ol'
Booze-Account Doty knows how to make a fool of
himself." And we hear he hasn't changed one bit. If our
sources are correct, the cliché is fitting: Can't teach an old
dog ...

Special Report Bo on the Run New reports concerning USM
historian Chester “Bo” Morgan and the publication of
USM’s centennial history, Treasured Past, Golden Future,
have been a popular feature here at USMNEWS.net in
recent days. These reports indicate that Morgan took a
leave of absence from Delta State University in 2008 in
order to move to USM (for one year) and work on the
centennial history.
USM CCO to USM Faculty Senate: You’re Powerless Ed
Kemp, the higher education reporter for The Hattiesburg
American, filed an interesting report for the 8-Feb-2012
issue of the paper that examines the importance of shared
governance at USM. In it, Kemp provides more on the
faculty senate’s role on the USM campus, and whether or
not the faculty senate president should have a seat on the
executive cabinet at USM.

Who Watches the Watchers? by Duane Cobb It has been three
months since the Mississippi Ethics Commission ruled on
Mississippi IHL Board member Douglas Rouse’s ethics
inquiry. That ruling (dated 16-July-2012) said that Rouse acted
improperly in having his medical practice earn revenues from
health insurance premiums paid by USM, a state institution,
for surgical services for its student athletes.

Apartment 66 A LOOK AT BO MORGAN’S CAMPUS PAD
FOR 2008-09 According to documents obtained via freedom of
information provisions by USMNEWS.net, the USM
community is just now learning about how much in USM
student and Mississippi taxpayer dollars was funneled down
various streams in order to fund the publication and
dissemination of Treasured Past, Golden Future. This book is,
of course, the centennial history of the 100 year old institution
(USM) that was commission by then-USM president Martha
Saunders back in 2008.

Dumpster Fire USM’s Streak of 17 Consecutive Winning
Seasons Goes Up in Smoke Not only was USM’s Homecoming
2012 spoiled by the 24 to 59 drubbing at the hands of the
Marshall Thundering Herd on 20-Oct-2012, the loss dropped
USM’s record to 0-7 on the 2012 season. With only 5 games
remaining, the 0-7 start means that for the first time since 1993,
USM will suffer a losing season in 2012. The 35-point loss at
home to a mediocre MU team also means that for the first time
since 2001 the USM football team will be sitting home during
the 2012-13 college football bowl season. With C-USA’s six
football bowl contracts, whose payouts range from $500,000
(New Orleans Bowl) to $1.4375 million (Liberty Bowl), USM’s
cash-strapped athletics department can hardly take being left
out of the bowls this year.

Dear usmnews.net, No one seems to know what she
screwed up so badly to not only get fired, but to be
replaced by a transitional president while she still held the
title of president. However, word around the water cooler
is that Martha Saunders' deal with the IHL was that she
would not return to Southern Miss this spring or ever.
The Farm News Briefs from Southern Miss
23-October-2012 Unmitigated Disaster The recent report,
"Dumpster Fire", explains just how disastrous Saturday’s
(20-Oct-2012) loss to Marshall was to the USM football
team, the athletics department and the institution in
general. As noted, the loss dropped USM to 0-7 on the year,
eliminating the team’s chances for a 2012-13 bowl bid

The Saunders Timeline: Reviewing the Prospective UWF
Provost’s Professional History The recent ascendency in the
selection process for a new provost at the University of West
Florida of former USM president Martha Saunders affords us
the opportunity of reviewing Saunders’ professional history.
This report does just that, using the timeline inserted below.
Along the timeline, Saunders’ educational milestones are
entered in red, while her professional activities related to
higher education administration are entered in ocean blue
font. All other entries are made in traditional black font.
MARTHA SAUNDERS MONTH We at usmnews.net

University of West Florida are selecting a new provost
MARTHA SAUNDERS MONTH. We provide
non-public relations information concerning Saunders'
tenure as president of the University of Southern
Mississippi. Decision makers can do with it as they
please, but they should, we believe, at least have access
to information that is not controlled by Martha
Saunders.
October 26, 2012
Dear usmnews.net, Shortly after Martha Saunders
"resigned" as President of Southern Miss, you ran a letter
to the editor that seems to have predicted what has
happened with Saunders. Apparently, less than six
months after claiming exhaustion and "resigning" from
her position as president, she is now refreshed and
looking to move on. Would you run that letter again for
your readers from the University of West Florida?

. . breaking news . . . USM’s Funded Research Sinking like a
Stone HATTIESBURG – Ed Kemp’s 26-Oct-2012 report for
The Hattiesburg American entitled “Research funding takes
a hit at USM,” paints a dismal picture of the funded grants
situation at the 100 year old university. Kemp reports that
research funding at USM has fallen from $82 million in 2010
to its current level of only $63 million. Between these two
dates, in 2009, funded research stood at $78 million. The data
from Kemp’s story for THA was combined with data from a
previous USMNEWS.net report from the fall of 2008 to
produce the picture below, which shows grants funding at
USM from 2000 through 2012.

31st & Pearl Dude, Where’s My Meal Card? If you’re one of
the nearly 100 new faculty at USM and you’ve read reports of
Chester “Bo” Morgan’s visiting professorship deal with
former USM president Martha Saunders, then you’re
probably wondering where you need to go to collect your
Southern Miss Catering meal card for the 2012-13 academic
year.
