Martha’s Podium An Editorial Cartoon Series from USMNEWS.net If you all are thinking about your spring break reading list already, this is one I recommend.
Will 2011-12 be a Banner Year? During the 2010-11 academic year, USMNEWS.net staff followed the progress of USM's athletics. As you can see, the Golden Eagles sports units won only 50.1% of their contests (i.e., 228.5 wins, incl. ties, in 456 contests) during 2010-11 ...

According to the ASU System press release, Hudson is thrilled to be taking over the top spot on the Jonesboro campus
It Would Have Been Easy A Brief History of the Fall of the CoB’s International Business Unit Based on documents housed in the USMNEWS.net library, it would have been very easy for the CoB to have maintained the stellar international business unit that existed at the turn of the 21st century and shortly thereafter.

Should Frey be Nervous? A Guest Column by Victoria Tyler With former USM provost, and former University of Houston-Victoria president, Tim Hudson’s 2-Mar-2012 selection to lead Arkansas State University, one has to wonder if Len Frey is nervous. Who is Len Frey? He is the business college dean at ASU. Why should he be nervous? Because it is highly likely that both Farhang Niroomand, the current business dean at UH-V, and Harold Doty,
Martha’s Podium An Editorial Cartoon Series from USMNEWS.net In continued celebration of our 100th anniversary, my administration is preparing to trade in the Beechcraft turbo-prop for this centennial Gulfstream G650 to my left. It is more than twice as fast as the Beechcraft, and so Chad has estimated that the cost per flight hour should be less than half as much. We’re thinking less than $400 pfh with this one.

Dear usmnews.net, Do you know what happened to last year's plan to centralize vacant lines? It was one of those things presented to the Faculty Senate then not mentioned again. Did the administration actually move the vacant lines through the dome then to favored departments?

Hudson’s Future Crib ASU Trustees’ Approach to Public Mansions Differs from Saunders’ Model The recent announcement that Tim Hudson, the former USM provost who also became the president of the University of Houston-Victoria, has been named as the second chancellor of Arkansas State University has many in the USM, UH-V, and Texas Tech University communities buzzing.
Martha's Podium, An Editorial Cartoon Series from usmnews.net Those of you around campus who are saying that Tim Hudson’s mansion is larger than mine – and you know who you are, and that you should check your references – are both wrong and out of excuses.
“Would That It Were So” USM’s Basketball Reality vs. Saunders’ Fantasy The quote above is, as noted, from USM president Martha Saunders’ Fall 2011 Convocation speech in Sept-2011. Then and there she was touting USM’s athletic successes, while at the same time bragging about the in-class achievements of the institution’s athletes. It is interesting to rehash this speech now, one day after Larry Eustachy’s Golden Eagles received an invitation to participate in the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Dear usmnews.net, I just couldn't help but add my two cents about this morning's report ["Would That It Were So", USM's Basketball Reality vs. Saunders' Fantasy]. Why should Southern Miss' APR score for basketball come as any surprise? As usmnews.net has reported for many months, Larry Eustachy's USM [2011] roster turnover rate averages a whopping 64.6% per year.

Martha’s Podium An Editorial Cartoon Series from USMNEWS.net One of you sent me this book about higher education. When I saw the subtitle, I was shocked to see Southern Miss there, especially after claiming that none of these types of books could possibly be about us. The subtitle also had me thinking that this book was going to be about my administration’s campus

"Move along ... not much here." The 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament, watched by tens of millions of Americans on television, was the audience for the racist chant by some members of the University of Southern Mississippi band. Can Mississippians and USM alums make it worse? You bet they can, and did. Consider one of the many thoughtless comments by Southern Miss and Hattiesburg folks to excuse and/or defend the racist chant:

The Chant Heard Around the World RACISM REARS ITS UGLY HEAD ONCE AGAIN AT USM Long-time readers of USMNEWS.net have seen big news stories develop at inopportune moments, at least in terms of this website’s schedule. Such was again the case on 15-Mar-2012, when the USM pep band chanted a racist slur

2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament Central Issue 2, 19-Mar-2012 No Solace Here . . . or There After USM’s untimely exit from the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament, many USM fans headed over to Pete Taylor Park in hopes of some solace in the way of a baseball victory over Murray State. Unfortunately, that was not to be as, as MSU dropped USM in game one of a three-game series. That lost put the Golden Eagles’ record at 10-8 on the season. MSU would also take game three in the weekend series, dropping USM’s 2012 season record to a disappointing 11-9.
