EDITORIAL: Building Better President: A Fun Viewpoint from
Susan Green-Lewis "Some in the USM community have, in
recent years, been disappointed with USM president Martha
Saunders’ apparent lack of knowledge about most matters
relating to higher education administration. Perhaps those
concerns have been addressed now that we know that
Saunders recently successfully completed an online course in
higher education administration and finance. Her instructor is
a high-ranking university administrator, and the
student-to-faculty ratio in the class was 1:1. These metrics
suggest that Saunders’ “education” is a quality one...".

Updated, The CoB's Brain Drain, 2003-Present -- Part 3 An
Illustrated History There is little argument with the notion
that the College of Business at USM has been severely
diminished by the faculty flight that has occurred since
former CoB dean, Harold Doty, assumed the reins of
management. Doty's tenure began in 2003, when he was
hired by former USM President, Shelby Thames, to lead the
newly reorganized College of Business & Economic
Development.
"... [I]t's easy to see the arc of the institution's trajectory and
priorities..." An August 15, 2011 Chronicle of Higher
Education article entitled, "Strategic Thinking," by Gene C.
Fant Jr., in part reports, 'For those of you pondering a move
into an administrative position, from department chair up
or in any kind of staff position with supervisory functions,
it's important to scout the institutions where you are
applying before going too far in the process... [a] document
that is exceptionally helpful [is] the institution's strategic
plan. The higher level the position, the more important it is
to access this information...'."
"Garcetti's Back" I'd like to share an interesting report from
The Chronicle of Higher Education. On August 16, 2011,
Bill Gleason wrote "Like Jason in 'Friday the 13th'?
Garcetti's back!" He offers a step-around to one of the most
ill-conceived and harmful Supreme Court decisions in its
history: Garcetti v Ceballos. It's well worth our
consideration.
Dear usmnews.net, I was stopped at a red light near
Southern Miss' brick sign board. It's the one with lights that
rotate through messages. On the board, Southern Miss is
still proclaiming a national ranking for its College of
Business.
