(March 16, 2009) The Failure of USM's "LE Experiment" And, Is Racism Part of this Story? When the leaders of your institution can't see what journalists are pointing out to them there is little reason to believe that your institution is being led by the capable. In USM's case, that point is hammered home time and again on the pages of USMNEWS.net. It's also true that local and statewide media are adept at "outthinking" USM time and again, as shown recently by The Clarion Ledger's sports guru Rick Cleveland, a USM alumnus. Five years ago Cleveland spelled out just why firing then-USM head men's basketball coach James Green, the first African-American to hold that post at USM, was a terrible idea. Five years later Cleveland got the chance to say "I told you so"
(April 7, 2009) 2008-09 No Banner Year Either During the 2007-08 academic year, USMNEWS.net staff followed the progress of USM's athletics teams in order to assess USM president Martha Saunders' Fall 2007 Convocation claim that Golden Eagles sports teams would be producing a "banner year" in 2007-08. The report that ultimately emerged from that assignment, "Aunt Martha's 'Banner Year'," is inserted below. As you can see, the Golden Eagles sports units won only 51.6% of their contests (i.e., 239 wins in 463 contests) during 2007-08, a result representing anything but a "banner year."
(June 1, 2009) Super Terrific The 38-24 win-loss record may not be much to brag about, but Corky Palmer's Golden Eagles have gotten hot in the 2009 post-season. One week after making it to the C-USA tournament finals, the Eagles won (on 1-June-09) the Atlanta Regional (see celebration photo below). Next week the Eagles head south to Gainesville, to take on the Florida Gators in USM's first-ever Super Regional.
(June 8, 2009) Palmer by Land, Saunders by Air Outgoing coach Corky Palmer and his 2009 USM Golden Eagles are to be congratulated for winning the Atlanta Regional (over host Georgia Tech) and heading to the school's first-ever Super Regional. A large contingent of USM fans met the conquering heroes at the baseball stadium upon their return, and rightly so.
