(January 14, 2008) CoB at a Crossroads PART 1 The Gunther Era: Waste, Scandal, and Farhang One can't understand where the
CoB is today without delving into the past, at least a bit. Many of the CoB's current difficulties can be traced back as far as 1998,
the year in which the William Gunther era in the CBA began. That year the CBA moved to replace Tyrone Black, its previous
permanent dean, with a new leader.1 The University's choice was William Gunther, a retiree from the University of Alabama.
Aside from having put a full career in at the UofAL, sources say that Gunther brought to the CBA a relatively weak academic
record, both in terms of teaching and research.
(January 15, 2009) GH Chatter Sources tell USMNEWS.NET that the EFIB's search to replace a number of departed economists is
in full swing. One story making the rounds is that a candidate who is possibly a relative of Mohsen Bahmani-Oskooee, a close
friend of CoB economist Farhang Niroomand, is one of the finalists for the open slots in EFIB.
(January 26, 2008) CoB at a Crossroads PART 2 The Doty Era: Hubris, Intemperance, and Farhang Unleashed The biggest
influence on where the CoB is today, January of 2008, has been Duane Harold Doty's tenure as Dean of the College -- a period
that ran from 2003-2007, and ended with Doty's shocking resignation on 9-April-07. Doty's first appearance in the business
college at USM came during the Spring of 2003, when he was selected as a finalist for Dean's opening in USM's newly formed
College of Business & Economic Development. The previous business Dean, William Gunther, had been fired by then-President
Shelby F. Thames in January of 2003. Upon firing Gunther, Thames reorganized the business college, adding new
departments/units, such as economic development, fashion merchandising, and tourism management.
(January 30, 2008) Breaking News Payback Hattiesburg – Sources are now reporting to USMNEWS.NET staffers that one of the
finalists for an ECO position in the EFIB, Sahar Bahmani of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, is indeed the daughter of
UM-W economist, Mohsen Bahmani-Oskooee. As reported earlier, Bahmani-Oskooee is a close friend of CoB economist, and
former CoB Associate Dean, Farhang Niroomand. Not only are the two close friends, reporters at USMNEWS.NET broke the
story about Niroomand's use of Bahmani-Oskooee to secure the 2001 Louis K. Brandt Research Award for another Niroomand
crony, economics professor Edward Nissan.
(February 6, 2008) CoB at a Crossroads PART 3 Farhang Niroomand: CoB "Attack Dog" Farhang Niroomand, CoB Associate Dean
from 1998 to 2007, has arguably been the most corrosive figure in USM's business school over the past decade. During Harold
Doty's administration of the CoB (2003-2007), Niroomand was essentially unleashed to plow through the CoB on a daily basis,
mistreating both faculty and staff all along the way. Niroomand's tirades are legendary, and they spared no one. Aimed at Lola
Ingram, Wanda Crain and other staff members, Niroomand gained the reputation as an "attack dog" in the Joseph Greene Hall
administration.
