FARHANG NIROOMAND, FORMER ASSOCIATE DEAN,
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS, CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF
HOUSTON AT VICTORIA
(November 8, 2007) 31st & Pearl P&T "Recusal Tactic" Diminishes Oversight Apparently no one has stopped to
recognize the fact that the P&T "recusal tactic" that we have read so much about lately only diminishes the
oversight role played by university-wide college advisory councils. The tactic is one wherein members of the CoB's
College Advisory Council recuse themselves from voting on P&T dossiers at the departmental level so that they
retain the option of voting at the CAC level. This is done because of the"one person, one vote" stipulation, though
there is reportedly never any record presented at the CAC level proving one has not already voted at the
department level. The tactic, popularized since 2003, or when the Harold Doty-Farhang Niroomand Administration
of the CoB reigned supreme, is used primarily on "controversial" P&T dossiers, as one might imagine.
Management professor Stephen Bushardt, now Chair of the CoB's CAC, has employed the tactic in the recent past.
Former Associate Dean Farhang Niroomand, now a member of the CAC, is poised to do so this year (2007-08).
(November 8, 2007) Can Doty and Niroomand Master the Art of the “Pick Up”? by Duane Cobb It’s no secret to
those following events in USM’s College of Business that its former Dean, D. Harold Doty, has been attempting to
land a new job since arriving at USM in 2003. Until early April of 2007, he was doing so as the CoB’s incumbent
Dean. Now, later on in 2007, he does so as just another CoB faculty member. For those of us who watched his early,
clumsy attempt to land the Dean’s post at the University of South Florida – yes, “watched;” the video is on the
worldwide web – we got to see what looked like a nerdy teenager trying to ask Jessica Alba to the junior prom.
(December 6, 2007) 31st & Pearl Niroomand's Statements on "Early P&T" Miss the Mark Throughout his recent
political campaign in support of the 2007-08 P&T files of second-year CoB economists Sami Dakhlia and Akbar
Marvasti, former Associate Dean and economics professor, Farhang Niroomand, made a number of faulty and
contradictory statements about the merits of the two cases. On one hand, Niroomand stressed that these two had
been in academia about eight and 24 years respectively, and therefore there was nothing at all "early" about their
promotions.
(December 24, 2007) CoB News, December 2007 CoB Turf Wars The CoB's recent Distinguished Alumnus Award
dinner, hosted for recipient Bruce Aust, was covered by Hattiesburg's society magazine, Signature. Photos from the
event appeared in Signature's December 2007 issue.
(January 13, 2008) CoB News, 13 January 2008 "Doty, or Niroomand? . . . Niroomand, or Doty?" It should come as no
surprise to "CoB News" readers that both former CoB Dean Harold Doty and former CoB Associate Dean Farhang
Niroomand are seeking new administrative posts elsewhere. While Doty is searching for a new Dean position, it
might surprise some to learn that Niroomand also believes he is qualified to serve as Dean of the business school
at various U.S. colleges and universities. As a result, Niroomand and Doty have been applying to some of the same
openings. We can't help but to wonder whether Niroomand is taking the opportunity to describe Doty in much the
same way he has described Doty (". . . that a**h**e" . . .) when visiting with various CoB faculty over the year
