ARTICLES CONCERNING
LANCE NAIL, DEAN
(November 11, 2008) 31st & Pearl On Carter's Head The recent CoB reorganization developed by new CoB dean
Lance Nail was no surprise to many in the CoB. Rumors have been circulating for weeks about such a plan, and the
October meeting wherein the details were made public did not really shock anyone in attendance. Given all this
time, some had already been thinking about what parts of the new organization might mean for the CoB, and for
current CoBers as well. One aspect of the plan -- the merger of economics and information systems into the new
Department of Economics and Decision Sciences -- has likely been at the front of the minds of many CoBers who
are in the process of working out (in their heads) all of the reorganization's ramifications.
(November 11, 2008) How Nail May Ultimately Fail A Guest Editorial New CoB dean Lance Nail introduced his
reorganization plan just over two short weeks ago. That plan created two additional departments, splitting up
economics from finance and international business, information systems from accounting, and management from
marketing. The new organization is, relatively speaking, a thing of beauty. But, there is one aspect of it that may
bring the whole thing down, along with Nail’s administration. That is the current goal of staffing the chairs positions
with six new, external individuals.
(November 15, 2008) Damn the Qualifications! Full Speed Ahead! by Duane Cobb One only has to gaze at the
recent CoB job postings at The Chronicle of Higher Education for a depression of sorts to set (back) in. There one
finds 10 openings that new CoB dean Lance Nail plans to fill, and only one of them is for a regular-line,
tenure-track faculty position. What a pitiful beginning to what was hoped by many to be a stellar CoB
administration. Now, it appears as if Nail believes the CoB can be returned to glory with a few more David Duhons
(as chairs) and an Evelyn Green (an instructor) in every department.
(November 24, 2008) GH Chatter Based on recent CoB chatter, one might conclude that more and more CoBers
believe new CoB dean Lance Nail will ultimately fail to turn the CoB around. What concerns most is Nail's
recurring absence from JAG.
(November 26, 2008) GH Chatter All of new dean Lance Nail's discussions about research, particularly research
quality, have CoB faculty buzzing. One indication of the change that is occurring are reports that Nail is telling
some EFIB faculty not be concerned about EFIB chairman George Carter's "literature presence," "rigor ratios," and
other tools Carter may have used in the past. It would seem, from these conversations at least, that a new day has
dawned in USM's b-school.
