(July 1, 2008) CoB News, 1 July 2008 "These are Nail's Decisions," by a 31st & Pearl Columnist If you're like me,
you're aghast at the news that management professor, David Duhon, is now the Kaetsu Distinguished Professor of IB.
There are so many things wrong with this situation, it's difficult to figure out where to begin. First, the Kaetsu belongs
in the EFIB, not in MGT & MKT. With Duhon, that's two holders in a row from MGT & MKT to have held the
professorship (former interim dean, Alvin Williams, was the first). Second, endowed professorships don't belong in
the hands of administrators. This is something CoBers are having a difficult time understanding. And, in the case of
the Kaetsu, Duhon marks the second administrator-holder in a row (again, Williams was the first). Third,
distinguished professorships don't belong in the hands of Duhon. This is the same guy who only two years ago
needed a "letter of agreement" (with former CoB dean Harold Doty, and Williams) to reach the rank of professor. His
research record is nowhere near the top of the CoB, even with all of the faculty attrition since 2003.
(July 9, 2008) CoB News, 9 July 2008 UAB Forgets Nail; USM Yet to Recognize Him A recent check of the University of
Alabama at Birmingham website revealed that new CoB dean, Lance Nail, has been replaced, at least on an interim
basis, as department chair. According to the UAB website (see below), Lary Cowart is now the interim chair of UAB's
Department of Finance, Economics, and Quantitative Methods. Nail is no longer a presence on that site.
(July 18, 2008) CoB News, 18 July 2008 $250,000 and a Promotion If the USM website (see below) is any indication,
then new CoB dean Lance Nail received a promotion-to-full as part of his initial compensation package.
(July 25, 2008) CoB News, 25 July 2008 Dean Nail's Inaugural Address New CoB dean, Lance Nail, may not have had
an actual inauguration ceremony, but he did send out a blanket e-mail to CoB faculty and staff marking the occasion
of his new appointment in USM's CoB. That e-mail, sent to CoB faculty and staff on 21-July-2008, is inserted below:
(August 5, 2008) CoB News, 5 August 2008 Don't Sleep on Nail With all of the reports about the "the greatest ever"
CoB faculty, CoB faculty and other readers of USMNEWS.net may have been distracted enough to have missed the
fact that the CoB's new dean, Lance Nail, has quite a respectable research portfolio of his own. That portfolio was
highlighted in Home Sweet Home for CoB Dean's Seat, and it contains the elite-level Journal of Financial Economics
and the A-level Journal of Banking & Finance.
(August 5, 2008)(updated November 19, 2008) "Happy day, Dean Nail. I am going to need $2,200 out of your budget."
On 11-April-2007, USMNEWS.net posted a report on CoB economist Daniel Monchuk's 23-page publication in the
Spring 2007 issue of the Review of Agricultural Economics. As that report, What Does a 'C-Publication' Cost These
Days?, indicated, Monchuk's publication in the RAE, which was at that time an unlisted journal in the CoB's journal
classification system, hit the CoB up for $2,185. This high price tag came as a result of the RAE''s $95/page publication
fee.
