(May 16, 2008) Home Sweet Home for CoB Dean's Seat How Lance Nail's Addition to the CoB Alters the FIN Research Portfolio Long-time EFIBers George Carter (chair), Farhang Niroomand (former associate dean), William Gunther (former dean), and Mark Klinedinst (former chair) are undoubtedly elated at the idea that the top spot in the CoB is headed "home" to the EFIB with USM President Martha Saunders' decision to hire Lance Nail as the CoB's fifth permanent dean. Nail, who comes to USM on 1-July-08 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is an associate professor of finance at UAB. Thus, Saunders' decision to have Nail succeed former CoB dean Harold Doty (from management) has most EFIB faculty shouting (figuratively) for joy.
(May 19, 2008) CoB News, 19 May 2008 Nail "In-House" According to Jana Bryant's 16-May-08 presser announcing USM's hiring of Lance Nail as the CoB's choice to succeed Harold Doty as the College's fifth permanent dean, Nail is currently the managing editor of the International Review of Financial Analysis. This fact mean that the CoB will be gaining a new in-house journal, and one that FIN faculty such as John Clark and Matthew Hood may want to take advantage of.
(May 30, 2008) CoB News, 30 May 2008 Beans Spilled in B'ham on Nail's Appointment in CoB In a 16-May-2008 article in the Birmingham Business Journal by Lauren Cooper, the Birmingham business community learned that Lance Nail, chairman of UAB's department of finance, economics and quantitative methods, "has taken the top spot" in USM's b-school beginning 1-July-2008. According to Cooper, Nail served as chairman at UAB for five years, and he was on the faculty there for more than 10 years.
(June 20, 2008) Breaking News No Raises in 2008, Except for Nail, Dakhlia and Few Others HATTIESBURG – In a 20-June-08 update to The Hattiesburg American's webpage, THA reporter Valerie Wells has informed the USM community that very few USM faculty and staff will be receiving raises this spring. This news came via USM Public Relations official, Jana Bryant, who informed Wells that outside of the usual promotion and/or reassignment raises, no one at USM will be getting a raise in 2008. This result may come as a surprise to many, given that USM President Martha Saunders has informed the USM community in one forum or another that she and her staff were combing the University's budget, hoping to find areas to carve out for merit and/or cost-of-living raises for all faculty and staff. According to Wells' report, Saunders failed in that quest, and there will not be any general raises after her (Saunders') first year in office.
(June 23, 2008) Don’t Worry, Be Happy The surviving cast from the Doty deanship plague is hoping to be happy under new Dean Lance Nail. That would be a nice change. So would having rules that are uniformly enforced; fair treatment in scheduling, advising and evaluations; and, a positive, non-hostile work environment. It makes sense that if – if – you want productive faculty members, they cannot hate to come through doors in the morning and cannot wait to escape back through them in the afternoons.
