LANCE NAIL, DEAN
(May 21, 2009) GH Chatter Just as one CoBer asked what conventional wisdom was with respect to CoB dean Lance
Nail searching next year (2009-10) for permanent replacements for his new interim department chairs, another chimed
in and said that Nail would do whatever it takes to allow him (Nail) to travel even more next year than he did this year.
Such was some of the recent chatter regarding the CoB's recent chairperson searches, and Nail's penchant for
travelling/being away from the CoB. Can you sense a little pessimism around the CoB about what became of Nail's
first year?
(May 27, 2009) Davis and George Elected to Faculty Senate According to the May-09 Faculty Senate meeting minutes,
the CoB's Donna Davis and Babu George have been elected to the USM Faculty Senate. Of course, when her name
was placed on the ballot, Davis, a professor of decision sciences, was a rank-and-file faculty member. Now she is the
new chair of the new department of business economics and decision sciences (BEDS). Surely, then, her election
victory will have to be voided and her seat vacated.
(May 27, 2009) No Corky in the CoB Another year, another trip to the NCAA Regionals for the USM baseball team.
This one (2009), however, was an improbable trip that came courtesy of USM's recent 3-win, 1-loss C-USA
tournament. Yes, Corky Palmer's Golden Eagles took down Tulane twice and national power East Carolina once en
route to the championship game against former NCAA champ Rice. That game, a close 6-8 loss to the Owls, also
helped clinch the Eagles' 2009 trip into the NCAAs. Clearly, Corky Palmer is the crown jewel of USM's athletics
department.
(June 3, 2009) Nail's Road The CoB's next visit from the AACSB, its national accrediting agency, will occur in February
of 2012. That falls right about in the middle of the 2011-12 academic year. As such, the 2010-11 academic year is the
all-too-important preparation year for the CoB's next AACSB re-affirmation process. Give this calendar, one would
think that CoB dean Lance Nail would attempt to leave, assuming he's looking to do so (as some reports have it),
during the upcoming 2009-10 academic year. Why then? Chances are decent that a "6th Year Review" will land in the
CoB's lap again in Feb-2012, so leaving in 2009-10 would give Nail a chance of escaping the blame for such an
outcome.
(June 15, 2009) Zantow Ousted as Grad Programs Director Stories are circulating around USM's b-school that associate
professor of management Kenneth Zantow has been ousted as the CoB's graduate programs director. Appointed to
the position by new CoB dean Lance Nail in the fall of 2008, Zantow began his duties in Jan-09.
(June 16, 2009) All Joe Just about everyone in USM's b-school knows that CoB dean Lance Nail is a difficult man to
find. That is due to the fact that he is usually jaunting around the southeast, seeking the next impossible-to-get
donation from so-called CoB supporters (in the private sector). While he may not have garnered any high-profile
donations, Nail must be doing something right. A new College of Business facility is now the #2 priority over in
facilities planning, right after the construction of a multi-level parking deck.
