LANCE NAIL, DEAN
(March 2, 2009) Evaluations and Standards Will the first annual evaluations in the Lance Nail era be any different
than in the past? George Carter is still writing his fiction for EFIB; therefore, no reason to believe he will not continue
his long standing tradition of disregarding reality to favor his friends and attack his enemies. Steve Jackson – even
more absent than ever – will most likely continue to tout and reward non-academic publishing and supporting the
Accounting party line as the two most prized activities in SAIS. Dave Duhon will evaluate about half of the building.
He will struggle, he will try to do a “fair” job, but will he honestly evaluate Harold Doty and the Tourism
Management faculty?
(March 9, 2009) Ghastly Service Ghosts A LOOK AT FALL 2008 SERVICE DERELICTION IN THE COB Faculty in
the CoB’s management and marketing department (MGT & MKT) have, on occasion, referred to CoB economics
professor Mark Klinedinst as “the ghost.” They do so because Klinedinst has spent much of his tenure in USM’s CoB
out of USM’s CoB. Put simply – he has, over the past 20+ years, rarely been around Greene Hall (JAG). Had he been
a stellar researcher, such behavior could be excused. In Klinedinst’s case, however, there has not been a publication
in an indexed journal article since 1998, an oft-cited statistic in reports and editorials here at USMNEWS.net.
(March 9, 2009) 31st & Pearl Unstreetable Kettle & Pot The recent USMNEWS.net reports and editorials on William
Gunther's opining, in his official capacity as director of the CoB's Bureau of Business & Economic Research, for $800
billion economic stimulus proposals has us pining for the days when former CBA dean Tyrone Black closed up the
Bureau the first time around. Black knew what former CoB dean Harold Doty didn't, and what current dean Lance
Nail appears not to, and that is that any business bureau in USM's b-school is a use (waste) of resources meant only to
cushion the existence of favored CoBers. In this case it's Gunther, and his associate Ed Ranck.
(March 12, 2009) Behind the 8 Eight Current CoB Faculty USM Doesn't Need to Lose by Duane Cobb As you can tell, I
like to rank CoB faculty against one scale or another from time to time (e.g., "the 5 best moves from the CoB," "the 5
worst moves from the CoB," etc.). I'm often told that my CoB faculty ranking essays are both controversial and
oft-requested by readers of USMNEWS.NET, and that I should provide more of them when possible. I am doing so
again here, and this time my ranking of "the eight (8) current CoB faculty USM doesn't need to lose" is probably no
less controversial than past topics.
