(April 6, 2009) The Good, the Bad, and the U-g-l-y More on the Hidden Costs of the CoB's post-2003 Decline Much has been written about the costs to the CoB of the disastrous administration of former dean D. Harold Doty (2003-07), and the interim administration of Alvin Williams (2007-08) that followed it. This report follows those before it by examining what may be viewed as "hidden costs" of the Doty et al. administrations of the CoB (since 2003). The so-called hidden costs examined here are revealed by a comparison of the teaching talents of current CoB faculty and those of faculty who departed the CoB in years past.

(April 22, 2009) Just How Toxic is the CoB's Environment? B-School Naghshpour vs. CoAL Naghshpour Suggests It's "Very" The Intro The recent series Our Most Talented Colleagues showed just how successful those former CoB faculty who departed USM in 2003 and later have been throughout their careers relative to current CoB faculty. The new recurring report Index Lost provides some evidence suggesting that those same CoB departures (since 2003) are doing much better on the research front these days than they were doing under the Harold Doty-Farhang Niroomand administration of the CoB (2003-07).w
(May 11, 2009) QPE Another Look at Teaching Quality in the CoB A number of reports here at USMNEWS.net have examined teaching quality in USM's College of Business. Many of these have used the data available at ratemyprofessors.com. The main statistic from RMP is "overall quality," which, in theory, should be a good measure of teaching quality. However, those familiar with higher education understand that good evaluations of teaching can be "bought" by "easy graders," which is a phenomenon that is, according to USMNEWS.net sources, prevalent in the CoB.
(May 12, 2009) The Wheels on the Bus Musical Chairs Malfeasance in the CoB, 2003-09 The turmoil caused by the D. Harold Doty administration (2003-07) of USM’s College of Business has been the subject of numerous studies, reports and editorials here at USMNEWS.net and elsewhere. One of the symptoms, if not also one of the causes, of such turmoil is the degree of turnover among the divisions of Doty’s administrative structure. That turmoil crept into the interim administration of Alvin Williams (2007-08), and plagued much of the first year of the Lance Nail administration (2008-09). To see what the turnover looked like, Table 1 lists the names of the individuals who held chairs, in sequence, from the first year under Doty (2003) through Nail’s first year (2009) at the helm of USM’s b-school.
(May 14, 2009) Naghshpour Wins BOF Distinguished Professorship Award HATTIESBURG – Former CoB associate professor of economics Shahdad Naghshpour has won the 2009 Butch Oustalet Family Distinguished Research Professorship Award. According to Charmaine Williams Schmermund’s 14-May-09 presser, the 2009 BOFDRPA was presented to Naghshpour, now a professor in the CoAL’s department of political science, international development and international affairs, “. . . for his dedication and contributions to research.”
