(June 4, 2008) Perks for Buds IV Size Really Doesn’t Matter MIS has been under scrutiny - again - recently for a drop in their
number of majors. They were asked again, this time by Interim Dean Alvin Williams, to, in essence, justify their existence. Part
of the decline in student credit hours was the elimination of the two one-hour skills courses; arguably those classes are no longer
necessary, but if you query the CoB faculty you find a consensus that the CoB students do not possess enough computer skills.
(June 6, 2008) No More Worries A 2008-09 Course Scheduling Guide for Floundering CoB Students One only has to visit the first
floor corridors of Joseph Greene Hall, home of USM's College of Business, just days prior to the beginning of a new semester to
see that a large number of CoB students have academic difficulties at one time or another. It is then that the CoB's Academic
Suspension Committee meets to decide the fates of suspended CoB students' appeals for reinstatement. The students,
themselves, crowd the first floor corridors and classrooms of JGH at this time, waiting for their individual appeal hearings.
(June 17, 2008) CoB Flashback: December 8, 2006 The CoB's final fall 2006 faculty meeting was held on December 8, 2006. There
is much to remember about the details of that meeting. So many things occurred that day, and many of them have received
significant attention on the pages of USMNEWS.NET. One thing that has received short shrift is the CoB's decision to form a
committee to address various classroom misbehaviors of CoB students.
(June 24, 2008) CoB News, 24 June 2008 Chills Down Their Spines Three former USM soccer coaches were awarded $1.2 million
in damages last week in Forrest County Circuit Court. According to Tim Doherty's 21-June-08 article for The Hattiesburg
American entitled "Ex-USM coaches awarded damages," former head soccer coach John Vincent and two assistant coaches filed
a sexual harassment, sexual discrimination and lack of due process lawsuit back in 2000. The suit named USM, former USM
President Horace Fleming, USM Athletics Director Richard Giannini and Senior Women's Athletics Director Sonya Varnell as
defendants.
(July 30, 2008) Course Raiders How the CoB is Losing Control over Business Courses at USM One of the more pressing issues in
USM's business school over the past few years has been the raiding of business-related courses by other divisions of the
University. This study examines some of the areas affected by this activity. This is done by way of an inspection of the Fall 2008
Course Schedule Guide, which is available from the USM Registrar's Office. That inspection begins below with CHS 425 and
CHS 428 (CHS=Community Health Sciences).
