(January 24, 2011) 31st & Pearl Filling Lyman’s Shoes As expected, Ed Kemp’s 20-Jan-2011 news story about the appeals of program cuts has everyone talking about USM provost Robert Lyman. It’s simple, really. Lyman’s remark about the transparency created by release of the appeals committee’s report, which will be helpful to the USM community in gauging president Martha Saunders’ response to those same appeals hearings, has many thinking that he is distancing himself from Saunders’ ultimate decision(s).

Downward Mobbing Now Part of USM’s Fabric HATTIESBURG – At the end of USM’s spring 2011 convocation on 12-April-2011, a Q&A session was held, ostensibly to field questions about Responsibility Centered Management (RCM). To the USM administration’s surprise, that session went in an entirely different direction when history professor Doug Chambers questioned the administration about reports that a total of six (6) various USM faculty were currently suspended from teaching for fear of danger.

(May 16, 2011) Lyman, Faculty Senate Address “Dangerous Faculty” New Report Includes Transcript from Faculty Senate Meeting The situation involving political science professor Kate Greene’s suspension from teaching her Supreme Court and Civil Liberties course was discussed at the 6-May-2011 USM Faculty Senate meeting. The conversation mainly involved USM provost Robert Lyman, Faculty Senate president Anita Davis, and Faculty Senators Stanley Hauer, Timothy Rehner, David Beckett, and Andrew Haley, though there is little doubt that other senators in attendance were paying close attention to what was said. HATTIESBURG – Late on 16-Nov-2011, USM public relations officials announced that USM provost Robert Lyman has resigned his administrative position and moved to the faculty ranks. Citing “personal reasons” for Lyman’s resignation, USM president Martha Saunders noted that Lyman helped move the academic side of the USM house through some rough times in recent years.
