(November 30, 2008) Jackson Hole How Ill-Advised Administration Staffing is Stifling the CoB The latest debacle
caused by the divergent standards between Hattiesburg and Long Beach are the problems associated with the
2008-09 tenure and promotion process. For the unfamiliar, the CoB's 2008-09 T&P process has been clouded by
incomplete dossiers, failure to hold faculty votes on the candidates (i.e., missed deadlines) and the like. And, much
of this disaster emanates from the CoB's accounting area, which is headed by untenured associate professor Steven
Jackson of CoB-GC. Jackson's tenure began in January of 2007 with him (Jackson) complaining openly about being
expected to wear a shirt and tie. In the fall of 2007 the accountants failed to hold a proper faculty governance vote,
largely because Jackson failed to show up to the annual departmental faculty meeting.
STEVEN R. JACKSON, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FORMER
DIRECTOR, SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY
(December 16, 2008) Dear Santa: I have tried to be a good boy this year, but it is hard when I am surrounded by
these people at work. Can I skip over the tape recording at the meeting thing? Thanks. For Christmas I want the
dean to pick someone else for the director job and let me go back to obscurity. I am tired of being bullied with hints
of tenure votes about anything they want. They can have it. In fact, it may be time for me and my wife to pack it up
and move on one more time. That is sounding better by the hour. You can have it, Mary!
(January 5, 2009) 31st & Pearl Permission Slip(-Up) USM President Martha Saunders often boasts about how USM
became a national research university without asking for anyone.s permission to do so. Saunders. brag is typical of
the heads of many states. second tier institutions, proudly embracing the "underdog" tag that is usually placed upon
these same institutions by political and business leaders who generally support a state's so-called flagship
institutions. What's interesting about Saunders' statement is that it can easily be turned on its head. Doing so is
particularly relevant to USM.s College of Business, which, in 2007, came within a hair of losing its AACSB
accreditation.
(January 13, 2009) Coast Cabal Monday Meetings? There are not many accounting course offerings on the Coast
campus. Isn’t it strange that there would be three offered at the same time on the same day? Steve Jackson, who is
only teaching on the Coast in the spring, Charles Jordan, and Roderick Posey all have Monday classes from 3:30 to
6:15 p.m.
(January 13, 2009) Steve? Has Steve Jackson called it a career as Director of SAIS? Instead of teaching any classes in
Hattiesburg, he is only teaching on the Coast. That is fine; that is what he was always supposed to do. When will
Steve be in Hattiesburg as Director? Word from the Coast is only for called meetings by Dean Nail.
