STEVEN R. JACKSON, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FORMER
DIRECTOR, SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY
(January 28, 2009) Doty's Great Raid of New Orleans, 2006-07 by Duane Cobb At the beginning of the Fall 2006 CoB faculty
meeting, former CoB Dean Harold Doty stood awkwardly before CoB faculty, as he usually did on such occasions, and
introduced new faculty. Near the back of the room stood current SAIS Director Steven Jackson, who Doty introduced as a new
CoB faculty who would be joining USM in January of 2007. Jackson was, at that time, employed by Loyola University in New
Orleans as the LeBlanc Professor of Business Ethics.
(January 29, 2009) CoB News, 28 January 2008 Jackson’s Professional Judgment? If accounting professors were beginning to
question how SAIS Director Steven Jackson would interpret the in one’s area/discipline part of his new directive on research
expectations in accounting, Jackson cleared that up quickly by informing them all that it was his prerogative, as Director of the
“SOAIS,” to make the determination.
(April 9, 2008) Breaking News Accounting Gets Defensive; Jackson Appears Agitated HATTIESBURG – Charmaine Williams’
9-April-08 presser entitled “Master of Professional Accountancy to be Offered at Southern Miss Gulf Coast in Fall” contains
some quotes from Interim SAIS Director, Steven Jackson, that indicate just how stressed the CoB’s accountants are becoming at
news about the AACSB’s criticisms of the intellectual activity in the accounting division of USM’s SAIS. According to Williams’
presser, Jackson told Williams that “he [Jackson] wants students to understand that the [accounting] faculty members are
knowledgeable and experienced.” Jackson then went on to tell Williams that the CoB’s accountants have published in a “variety
of journals,” listing the Journal of Applied Business Research, Practical Tax Strategies, and The Journal of Accountancy, among
others.
(April 21, 2008) Ghost of Christmas Future Editorial Cartoon Dear First-Year Business Students, Congratulations on choosing
Southern Miss' College of Business for your educational pursuits. The faculty in each of our four departments and schools think
with one mind, so you won't face any confusion from the diversity of thought that is often encountered by students majoring in
one of USM's four other colleges. As you progress in your academic careers, some of you will meet with varying degrees of
success, while others of you will fail. Should you become one of the students who faces academic suspension at some time in
your career here, please don't hesitate to stop by and talk to me, regardless of your choice of major. The COB's Undergraduate
Services Director is Gwen Pate, and she has the final say in overturning the college suspension committee's decision to deny
your hardship appeal. Gwen is also an associate professor of accounting, so she works for me. I can talk to her for you and we can
have that suspension committee's decision overturned. (Don't worry, Gwen is known around Greene Hall for caving.)
