(August 7, 2007) Management & Marketing News, 8 August 2007 We have a number of interesting news items to report from the
Management & Marketing Department as we approach the start of 2007-08. A few of these are detailed below.
ARTICLES CONCERNING
STEVEN R. JACKSON, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FORMER
DIRECTOR, SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY
(August 27, 2007) The Mother of All Questions: Why did Steven Jackson get a 2007 Merit Raise? Has anyone thought about the
question above? Think about it. Jackson joined the CoB in January of 2007. The 2007 merit raises covered teaching, research and
service accomplishments of CoB faculty over the period 2004-2006. Jackson was employed by Loyola University of New Orleans
during that time. Don’t you have to actually work for USM to qualify for a merit raise?
(October 1, 2007) A College in Crisis by Duane Cobb New USM President Martha Saunders now knows what many of you have
known for some time. That is, USM's College of Business is a College in crisis. And, though some in the CoB seem incapable of
seeing it, the crisis goes well beyond the AACSB Maintenance of Accreditation process.
(October 8, 2007) CoB Power Line A Look at Who Holds the Reigns of Power in the CoB by Duane Cobb The CoB has devolved
into such an academic banana republic of sorts that it is probably useful to take stock, from time to time, of just who holds the
most political power there. Without question political power in the CoB waxes and wanes, just as it does in any of the typical
unstable, tin pot hot spots around the globe. That's what updates are for.
(October 8, 2007) Special Report Memo to Martha, Part I A Look at Alvin Williams’ Role in the Mobbing of Aug-07 Reporters at
usmnews.net have received a copy of a memo sent by Interim CoB Dean Alvin Williams to USM President Martha Saunders,
through Interim Provost Bobby Middlebrooks, asking Saunders to terminate the employment (at USM) of USMNEWS.NET
editor and accounting professor, Marc DePree. Williams’ letter is dated 21 August 2007, the same day that Saunders penned a
letter to DePree advising DePree that he was being relieved of his teaching and services responsibilities to USM during the fall
2007 semester.
