(May 11, 2009) Dear Skip: The change in culture in your area is more than a research change, but that is obviously the major concern. It seems your colleagues believe that they cannot teach large numbers of students in a class or teach anything at night; these beliefs have been placated by the revolving director syndrome that has long plagued Accounting. Given budget and staffing concerns, large sections of principles are necessary for many reasons; we are sure you understand this situation. These are not isolated items because the “reason” given for not teaching large sections and at night is that it interferes with research. That is simply absurd. It is time to cure two ills at once.
(July 15, 2009) Skip to My Inbox Accounting faculty in USM's b-school recently heard (via e-mail) from their new leader, Kirby E. "Skip" Hughes. In his communiqué, Hughes noted a number of activities that have been ongoing involving some of the CoB's accounting faculty. A summary of these follows:
(July 16, 2009) Same Old, Same Old Recent reports about new accounting director Kirby "Skip" Hughes show, once again, just how quickly former Tier I and II business faculty from other places transform into Tier III administrative disasters at USM. It's almost as if all sense of reason (and everything else) is removed when these newbies cross the Leaf and Bowie Rivers coming into Hattiesburg. New accounting director Hughes, formerly with Tier II Louisiana State University, has now settled in with the CoB and is now easily making Tier III-quality administrative decisions. The most recent was to "reward" former SoA directors Robert Smith and Roderick Posey with nicer, larger, and more isolated offices (second floor of JAG). This one would've made another former SoA director, James Crockett, proud.
(July 19, 2009) Another Trip Down Memory Lane? A Look at Skip Hughes' Decision to Staff AIS The recent USMNEWS.net report entitled "Skip to My Inbox" indicated that new CoB ACC director Kirby E. "Skip" Hughes pushed the CoB administration for an accounting information systems (AIS) course for the ACC core and that he was granted both support for the new course as well as an effort to hire an AIS professor. The search for the AIS professor during 2008-09 failed, as so many other CoB searches did. CoB dean Lance Nail, however, allowed Hughes to (1) make a visiting AIS hire for 2009-10 and (2) continue the search for a permanent AIS faculty during 2009-10.
(July 19, 2009) As the CoB Turns Finally, down in accounting, readers of USMNEWS.net will likely be waiting to see if Hughes assigns visiting accounting professor Arthur Sorochinsky a "too smal l"office in the ACC suite, or an industry-average sized one (150 sq. ft.) in some other part of JAG.
