(May 10, 2010) Around the CoB Thoughts on Skip Hughes and Trellis Green Why does Skip need an office far from the accounting faculty? How much ego does Skip Hughes have that he has to have to biggest office on the third floor when the accountants move to the third floor? The office used to belong to the graduate director, but that was broken by former Interim Dean Alvin Williams and Dean Lance Nail when they allowed former dean Bill Gunther to waste the space by occupying it.
(May 17, 2010) Skip Knows ‘CoB Code’ Another Look at the SoA Director Hughes’s Description of Michael Dugan The CoB’s newly hired Horne LLP Distinguished Accounting Professor, Michael Dugan from the University of Alabama, received lavish praise from CoB dean Lance Nail and School of Accountancy director Skip Hughes, all via Van Arnold’s 11-May-2010 press release entitled “Dugan to Join School of Accountancy Faculty in Fall.” This praise was the subject of USMNEWS.net’s recent 31st & Pearl editorial entitled Consummate Caregivers. There is, however, a phrase uttered by Hughes (about Dugan) from Arnold’s presser that was not examined in that prior report, and is the subject of this column. That quote from Hughes is –
(May 19, 2010) . . . breaking news . . . Hughes, Sequeira Tenured; What About Monchuk? HATTIESBURG – CoB faculty Kirby “Skip” Hughes and Jennifer Sequeira were awarded tenure by the Mississippi IHL at its May 2010 monthly meeting. Hughes was brought into the CoB this past year from Louisiana State University as a professor and director of the CoB School of Accountancy. Thus, he submitted his tenure dossier almost immediately upon arrival, which sources say is an unusual event as far as new CoB hires are concerned. Sequeira is an associate professor of management who was promoted well before submitting a tenure dossier.
(May 31, 2010) The Parker-Hughes Audit More on ‘the Bottom Line’ in the CoB’s School of Accountancy The recent USMNEWS.net report, “How is Hiring Michael Dugan a Good Deal?” sparked a great deal of interest among readers. That report explained how incoming CoB accounting professor Michael Dugan (from the University of Alabama) will actually generate a net Fall 2010 loss to the CoB of anywhere from $45,000 to $57,000, given what is expected to be Dugan’s fall 2010 salary + fringes (about $94,000) and the tuition revenues generated by Dugan’s fall 2010 teaching assignment (about $36,000 to about $48,000). This report provides similar analyses of “the bottom lines” pertaining to relatively new SoA faculty Paula Parker and Skip Hughes.
(June 3, 2010) GH Chatter The pending arrival on the third floor of JAG of the CoB’s accountants is causing all sorts of shuffling on that floor. However, chatter has it that none of the accounting faculty has even bothered to make the move, even though others are inconveniencing themselves to prepare the way.
(June 25, 2010) GH Chatter Talk around JAG is that new accounting director Skip Hughes has already established dominance over the other chairs in the CoB. Skip has apparently gotten most, if not all, of what he’s asked for since arriving in 2009. The latest item appears to be the shifting of the 3rd floor marquee boards, which is amusing to many CoB faculty and staff. The accountants are rarely seen, leading many to laugh at the speed of this latest venture.
