(April 13, 2009) Dear Skip: One way to begin a culture change in Accounting is announce that this is the last year Accounting will have instructors on the faculty. The instructors’ drive-through mentality and no research participation has infected the tenure-track faculty members. This will require some people to step up and participate or the shutting down of certain activities in the Department. This will also rightfully raise teaching loads up to the rest of the College.
(April 13, 2009) Dear Skip: Another way to begin a change in Accounting is to announce that all faculty vita are public information and will be regularly maintained by the Department online. Any issues raised such as the Posey “more than 100” publications will be addressed immediately and will be shown to be true or removed from the vita and all College and University websites. Further, if the Morgan Professorship was awarded to Posey on the basis of this claim, and if that claim proves to be unfounded, then Posey will lose all rights, privileges, and money associated with it back to the date he assumed it. It would be a positive start to change the culture.
(April 14, 2009) Dear Skip: Another way to begin a change in Accounting is to open the process of awarding the Morgan Professorship. Dating back to the Jim Crockett era, the Morgan Professorship has been viewed by accounting faculty as an entitlement for anyone reaching full professor. They even had a rotation order drawn up to placate – or threaten - those in the back of the line. The result – metaphorically – is the Morgan is like the town whore: everyone gets his turn with her. As you can see, this is not exactly something to aspire to as a career goal.
(April 15, 2009) Dear Skip: Do you remember the old joke about Texas that the citizens of Texas wanted to build a twenty foot wall all the way around the state so no one else could get into their great state? They did not do it because they found out everyone else thought it was a great idea. By analogy, that is the faculty you are inheriting.
