(March 13, 2008) Breaking News Williams Riding Herd on Gunther and the BBER HATTIESBURG – Interim CoB Dean, Alvin Williams, appears to be riding herd on William Gunther, professor of economics and Director of the CoB's Bureau of Business and Economic Research. After months of reports here at USMNEWS.NET showing how Gunther, who earns more than $125,000 per year and who lives near Gulf Shores, Alabama, rarely does anything remotely resembling actual work, Williams was elevated to Interim CoB Dean in April of 2007, citing an increase in the presence of the CoB's centers and bureaus as one of his (Williams') main goals. Since that time, the level of activity in Gunther's BBER has escalated dramatically, with the last example being the BBER's economic symposium to kick off the spring 2008 semester.
(March 18, 2008) 31st & Pearl They Should Know Not one of the CoB's former Deans has been able to successfully use the position as a stepping stone to bigger and better administrative posts. That fact includes the two most recent occupiers of the second floor Dean's suite in Greene Hall, William Gunther and Harold Doty. To the contrary, Gunther was fired in January of 2003, while Doty submitted a surprising resignation in April of 2007. Today, with the benefit of hindsight and additional information, Doty's resignation looks more like the type of "let go" scenario Gunther faced five years ago.

(May 20, 2008) There's No Denying It, They Were All There by Duane Cobb The opinion that the 2002-07 USM Presidency of Shelby F. Thames was an unmitigated disaster is one that is widely held. One gets glimpses of why this is so from (the pages of) the various news media (e.g., The Hattiesburg American, The Clarion Ledger, The Student Printz, etc.) and web blogs (e.g., the USM Forum -- to build trust, a team and a campus -- Message Board, Liberty & Power, USMNEWS.NET, etc.) that reported on the USM issues of the day. One can also sense the devastation wrought on the institution (USM) by the Thames administration from the oral histories passed on by those (faculty, staff, students, etc.) who were "there" during that awful time.
(May 27, 2008) 2007-2008 CoB Awards Another academic year draws to a close, it is time to look back and salute some of the CoB faculty members would will not otherwise get their just rewards. The following is a list of the major awards:
(June 5, 2008) CoB Flashback: May 7, 2003 In May of 2003 USM's business school was known as the "College of Business and Economic Development." The name had changed from "College of Business Administration" back in January of 2003, when then-USM President Shelby Thames reorganized the University and fired all of its deans. That included CBED Dean William Gunther, who was set to complete his 2002-03 contract and be out of office by June 30, 2003.
