(June 27, 2007) 31st & Pearl Deans & Sabbaticals The recent report that Interim Dean Alvin Williams has been awarded sabbatical leave for one part of the 2007-08 academic year questions whether or not Deans can take sabbaticals.
(July 3, 2007) 31st & Pearl Dark Shadows It’s no secret that Jack and Jill Hattiesburg have a low opinion of USM faculty. To counter this, many USM faculty have suggested that Jack and Jill shadow a USM professor for a day or more. To this we say: Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. It’s not much of a stretch to suggest that such a shadowing program might give Jack and Jill an even worse perception of USM than they had before. Consider two faculty from EFIB – one on either side.
(July 24, 2007) Driving Ms. Doty What William Gunther's SEDONA Vita Says about Susan Doty's Qualifications to Head the Center for Economics Education at USM On 20-July-2007, reporters at USMNEWS.NET broke the story (see headline below) that an EFIB search committee had selected Susan Doty, wife of former CoB Dean Harold Doty, as its preferred candidate for the opening as Director of the EFIB's Center for Economics Education. Contained in that story is a copy of a 20-July-2007 e-mail to EFIB
(August 8, 2007) Breaking News Niroomand Now Holds a Top Spot at Omicron Delta Epsilon HATTIESBURG – Robert R. Ebert, President of Omicron Delta Epsilon (International Honor Society in Economics), announced on 1-July-07 that, after 30 years of service, the USM College of Business’ William Gunther retired (effective 1-July-07) as Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the international organization. Gunther, a former Dean of the USM CBA, served the last 15 of his 30 years alongside his wife Irene, who worked as the Administrative Assistant to the Executive Secretary-Treasurer.
(August 23, 2007) Niroomand 4, Doty 0 The recent 31st & Pearl column entitled “300” spelled it out clearly – former CoB Dean Harold Doty does not appear to be getting any post-Dean royal treatment since joining the CoB’s regular-line faculty. As Duane Cobb said after reading that column – “That’s a good thing. He [Doty] doesn’t deserve it.” However, former CoB Associate Dean Farhang Niroomand represents the other half of the “package deal” that was the CoB administrative resignation of 9 April 2007. How has the treatment of Niroomand been since he rejoined the CoB’s regular-line faculty? Or, better yet, how does the treatment of Doty compare to that of Niroomand? Reporters at USMNEWS.NET think readers will be intrigued by some of the results that were found when the “data” were examined. This event takes a look at what former CBA Dean William Gunther has been doing lately to advance the careers of Doty and Niroomand.
(September 20, 2007) Special Report Top-Down Ethics A Look at the Service Dereliction of the CoB’s Former Dean
Reporters at usmnews.net have received tips indicating that former CBA Dean William Gunther is not living up to his service responsibilities. Table 1 below presents data on the CoB’s Faculty Senators’ presence/absence at Faculty Senate meetings over the past two academic years (i.e., 2005-06 and 2006-07). This information comes from the USM Faculty Senate’s website (see Minutes) -- http://www.usm.edu/fsenate/.
