(April 6, 2009) Cheaper by This Dozen Twelve Current CoB Faculty USM Dean Lance Nail Could Stand to Lose by Duane CobbPicking up where my recent ranking of CoB faculty that CoB dean Lance Nail can’t afford to lose (Behind the 8) left off, this report ranks the top 12 current CoB faculty that dean Lance Nail can’t afford to have hang on for an extended period. That is, without these 12 CoB faculty, the CoB’s ranking amongst Gulf South business schools would certainly rise higher. Since this list is 50% longer than the last, let’s get right to it:
(April 9, 2009) 31st & Pearl Chi Omicron Beta The fact that we weren't surprised to learn that untenured assistant professor of economics Deniz Gevrek is maintaining a residence in Austin, TX, shows just how "like a Phoenix" USM's College of Business has become since 2003. The earlier finding that another untenured assistant professor of economics, Daniel Monchuk, is living in Washington, D.C. -- almost 1,000 miles from Hattiesburg's USM -- makes almost every other location seem nearby. The Gevrek news did, however, get us to thinking about some "economizing" opportunities in the whole commuter faculty trend. That is that the Monchuks, Gevreks, Jordans, Smiths, and Gunthers of the CoB should all band together and rent a large house, perhaps even one in Hattiesburg's tony Canebrake neighborhood complete with swimming pool, hot tub, billiards and wet bar, for their teaching fly-ins (or drive-ins).

(April 23, 2009) Symbolism - from the past to the future One of the many bombs former Interim Dean Alvin Williams left current Dean Lance Nail was the continuing problem of Bill Gunther and his entitlement mindset. One example: Gunther was moved into what is the graduate director’s office in the College of Business when he was canned by Shelby Thames. When Harold Doty arrived as dean, he let the utter nonsense continue because he was not able to run-off Gunther after repeatedly saying he would do so
(May 27, 2009) UWF The University of West Florida – UWF – sits near the beautiful beaches of Pensacola. It is the former professional home of USM president Martha Saunders, as well as that of a number of former CoB accountants. One would have thought (even hoped) that UWF would have played a much larger role in the CoB's recent past than it did.
(July 19, 2009) As the CoB Turns While CoB economics professor William Gunther, currently the director of the CoB's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, drones on about "consumer confidence" at the BBER's mid-year economic conference down on the Mississippi coast, recently hired finance professor Francis Laatsch finally took the in-person reins of his new department, the FINRELS (finance, real estate and legal studies). Meanwhile, Laatsch's new department seems in disarray, partially due to the last-minute departure of associate professor John Clark.
