SHARED GOVERNANCE IN THE COB
(August 24, 2007) Breaking News More Fait Accompli Governance Williams Releases P&T Policy "Suggestions" HATTIESBURG
-- In a surprising move, Interim CoB Dean Alvin Williams released on 23-Aug-07 the latest draft of the proposed new Promotion
& Tenure policies for CoB faculty. Before announcing that CoB faculty will be voting (up or down) on these new P&T policies,
Williams' e-mail informs all CoB faculty that the "attached P&T document has been approved by the Management Team and the
College Advisory Council (CAC)." Williams' e-mail is shown below:
(August 24, 2007) CoB's Mission Statement Completely Overhauled Most of the Work Done During Summer 2007, While Faculty
Were Away While most CoB faculty were away, the CoB's Mission statement was revised at least two times during the summer
of 2007. The proposed new Mission was circulated via e-mail on 23-Aug-07 by Interim Dean Alvin Williams, and a copy of it
appears at the end of this report. Williams' e-mail also notified faculty that the CoB will vote on accepting/rejecting the proposed
new Mission statement at its fall 2007 meeting (held on 31-Aug-07).
(August 31, 2007) Breaking News EFIB Governance, 2006-2008 George Carter Run Amok HATTIESBURG Almost 20 EFIB
faculty participated in the department's 30-Aug-07 faculty governance election, and not a single vote was cast for the 3-person
committee governance option. EFIB Chair George Carter got his slam dunk victory, but that was expected by everyone in the
room. As such, Carter's victory is not news. What is news, however, is Carter's preamble to the EFIB department governance vote.
Sources tell USMNEWS.NET that Carter spent some time explaining to the faculty in attendance the meaning of the phrase
"Corps of Instruction," and how that phrase fits into USM's faculty governance proceedings. As Carter explained to the EFIB,
faculty with the "visiting" title are not part of the EFIB's "Corps of Instruction," and are not allowed to participate in the
governance vote.
(September 4, 2007) Ethics Update, Sept-07 "Our tradition of excellence continues to reinforce our commitment to . . . a sense of
ethical behavior." Alvin J. Williams, Interim Dean, USM College of Business Administration, 2007
(December 7, 2007) Dear USM Pride, Don’t be surprised to find out in the future that there is some “shadow governance” going
on in the COB. There is a faction of faculty in management that is currently being shut out of certain processes. This has
supposedly been going on for a while in EFIB also.
