(August 26, 2008) Punitive Teaching Schedule = “Informal Discipline” Lessons from Roderick Posey’s Recent U.S. District Court Testimony Former interim dean and former SAIS Director, Roderick Posey, recently provided sworn testimony in a United States District Court proceeding that significantly diminished the reputations of both USM’s business school and its former dean, Joseph A. Greene. During a discussion about “informal discipline” of faculty (by administrators) in USM’s business school, the following exchange between Posey and legal counsel occurred, wherein Q=legal counsel’s question/statement, and A=Posey’s response:

A Look at the 200-09 CoB-H MGT Salaries Though some of our sources have in the past questioned whether or not associate professor of MGT, Jon Carr, will actually be departing the CoB for Texas Christian University in January of 2008, data in the 2008-09 USM Budget Book support the news of Carrs looming departure. That same Budget Book also points to at least some of the likely reasons that Carr will be bouncing in the coming months. These have to do with how far behind Carr, the recipient of the 2007 Louis K. Brandt Research Award, is in terms of salary.

(September 13, 2008 ) Top 10 CoB-H Faculty Salaries Isn't it amazing that, across both 9- and 12-month contracts, three of the five highest paid faculty in the CoB are economists, and two of them are on 9-month contracts. Not only that, both of them earn significantly more than any of the CoB's finance faculty, a discipline that is generally known for much greater salaries out in the "real world." If we weren't talking about the business school at the University of Southern Mississippi, this would all probably be unbelievable. But, it's all true, as the 2008-09 USM Budget Book data shown below in Table 1 attest.

(September 22, 2008 ) Special Report "Things Change, Things Stay the Same," Again A Look at 2008-09 Salaries in CoB-H Marketing No CoB-H unit has experienced the changes that the CoB-H's marketing unit has experienced in just the last few years. Gone are the Babins (Barry and Laurie) Tony Henthorne, Alvin Williams, Tara Lopez, and Talai Osmonbekov.1 With these went so many A- and B-level publications it would be difficult to list them all. Now, the CoB-H's marketing unit consists mainly of relatively new faces. And with that, marketing's salary structure has changed quite a bit as well.

(September 19, 2008) CoB News, 19 September 2008 Cool Beans Word that the Martha Saunders administration of USM has committed $1,000,000 to the CoB’s research efforts over the next three years only adds to growing confidence that new CoB dean Lance Nail (shown below) will eventually turn the CoB around and move it back towards its former glory. According to the plan, Saunders et al. will provide more than $330,000 to the CoB in each of the next three summers in order to support summer research grants for CoB faculty. Individually, these grants will be as large as 10% of a recipient’s 9-month pay, representing a commitment at least as good as that gained through award of a University Research Council summer research grant. One difference is that this commitment is CoB-specific, and it will be extended over a much broader scale than the URC process (on a per-college basis).
