(October 7, 2008) Bad Apples A Look at How George Carter's Politics May Ruin the Nail Administration Have no doubts about it, EFIB chairman George Carter is on a mission to bring down the new Lance Nail administration of USM's College of Business. And, with the hiring and firing and "friendraising" efforts Carter has made over the past two decades, he may indeed pull it off before it is all over. This column is Part 2 in a three-part series of opinion pieces that will attempt to explain just how Carter may pull off the coup that some in the CoB are hoping for and others are nervous about.

(December 22, 2008) Top Stories of 2008 by Duane Cobb 12. Duhon Named Kaetsu Professor -- The 22-Sept-08 installment of 31st & Pearl entitled Kaetsu Kronies pretty much said it all -- the selection of CoB research weakling David Duhon, an administrator and professor of management, to become the CoB's Kaetsu Distinguished Professor of International Business was "pretty much the last straw for those who were holding on to the hope that CoB cronyism was breathing its last breath." Yes, the selection of Duhon quashed that hope. Though to be fair to the new Lance Nail administration, this decision was another of the ill-advised actions taken by former interim CoB dean Alvin Williams.
(January 26, 2009) A 31st & Pearl Special Series The Duhon Standard A Look at How the CoB is Governed by Exceptions, not Rules It was only a few short years ago that then-associate professor of management, David Duhon, approached then-MGT & MKT chairman, Alvin Williams, and then-CBED/CoB dean, Harold Doty, to request detailed information on what it would take for Duhon to receive their support for his promotion-to-full application. Duhon had submitted at least one application during the William Gunther administration (1998-2003) that wasn't well-received. His research record was weak, to say the least, and this time Duhon wanted firm guidance. Instead of presenting Duhon with a crisp, clean copy of Enhancing Faculty Productivity (the CoB's faculty handbook) and instructing him to reacquaint himself with it, as they should have done, Williams and Doty took it upon themselves to draw up a plan wherein Duhon was to publish a handful of additional journal articles, one of which was already accounted for by a "forthcoming" pedagogical paper on Duhon's record at that time.
(February 18, 2009) The Dotys are Vulnerable . . . . . . . Maybe How Kicking ECO 336 to the Curb may Impact Some CoB Faculty Members Now that the CoB has voted to eliminate the ECO 336 (international economics) requirement in the core curriculum, more than just former CoB economist Charles Sawyer's textbook income will likely be impacted.
(February 24, 2009) Missing & Musical Professorships What Happened to the Williams & Parham-Bridges, and Who Should Hold Them? The CoB has a few professorships. The list includes (1) the Morgan Distinguished Professorship in Accounting, (2) the Draughn Distinguished Professorship in Healthcare Marketing, (3) the McCarty Distinguished Professorship in Information Systems, and (4) the Kaetsu Distinguished Professorship in International Business. Not included among this list are the Williams Distinguished Professorship in Minority Entrepreneurship and the Parham-Bridges Distinguished Professorship in Real Estate. These two are omitted from the list of four above not because they aren't funded. No, they have been funded, and in the case of the Parham-Bridges, the funding is substantial and it has been around (i.e., in the USM Foundation) for quite some time.
