(January 11, 2007 ) What Will Doty “SAIS” Now? The CoB was told that Dr. Stan Lewis was hired for one year as
Interim Director of SAIS (School of Accountancy and Information Systems). During that year, despite it being the same
year as final preparation for and visitation by an AACSB re-accreditation team, Doty would initialize and Barry Babin,
Chairman of Marketing and Management, would lead a nationwide search for the new SAIS Director. Does Dr. Babin
have a vast knowledge of accounting? No. Information Systems? No. Great experience as a chairman? No. A lot of
experience running searches? Not exactly. The reason for Babin’s positioning here is obvious: he and Doty are one, so
control is maintained.
(January 14, 2007 ) Above Your Pay Grade? Military men (and women) often use expressions that reflect their
experience in the military. One such expression is “That’s above your [my, our] pay grade.” This saying is used to
indicate that the recipient of the statement has no business involving himself or herself in whatever “that” is. This
particular expression has been (over)used by EFIB Chair George Carter through the years as part of his crusade to
create a culture of detached submission among rank and file faculty, but the concept is supported by almost all
administrators in the CoB.
(January 16, 2007 ) “Hurtful Language” As most of you know, I am not part of the Economics, Finance and International
Business Department (EFIB) of USM’s CoB. I am a professor in the School of Accountancy and Information Systems.
Therefore, I had not heard the prepared speech Dr. Carter gave his colleagues in support of subverting a legitimate
faculty governance vote. However, I did read Dr. Carter’s report of that meeting. Dr. Carter claims that words used in a
usmpride.com report entitled “45 Minutes” justified his decision to nullify duly elected governance in EFIB because he
feared the language on this board was “uncomplimentary, derisive, or hurtful”. He wanted to silence his faculty. Let’s
review Chairman Carter’s behavior and measure it in accordance with the imposition of his “hurtful” language
principle.
(January 17, 2007)8-Dec-06 CoB Meeting News Bytes George Carter admitted that neither he nor anyone else affiliated
with USM authored the Participating and Supporting Faculty Standards document. He claimed that all sorts of schools
are using that document for AACSB Accreditation purposes.
(January 11, 2007) Doty’s Legacy, and Gall "CoB Dean Harold Doty has gall. He has the gall to stand in front of CoB
faculty, as he did in December of 2006, and critically remark that former CBA Dean Joseph Greene’s standard for
raises was “who had the children last.” It takes gall to make such a statement when one’s own standard seems to be
“who has the biggest mortgage” or “who has the most expensive lifestyle.” Doty’s CoB is far from a meritocracy. In
fact, Greene’s college may have been more like a meritocracy than Doty’s, now that USM has ushered in the research
focus that was not part of Greene’s world...".
