D. HAROLD DOTY, FORMER DEAN, COLLEGE OF
BUSINESS, CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT
TYLER
(August 5, 2008) CoB News, 5 August 2008 The Doty Channel Total views of the YouTube version of then-CoB
dean Harold Doty's Sept-2005 speech to faculty and administrators at the University of South Florida have
climbed to 750. In one of the most embarrassing displays in recent memory, Doty told those assembled in Tampa,
where he was interviewing for the post of business school dean, that "private money" is the "fun money" in that
administrators have greater discretion over its use, as opposed to public funds ("E&G dollars").
(August 25, 2008) Harold Doty to Teach 4-days/Week Schedule in Fall '08 USMNEWS.net has learned that former
CoB dean, Harold Doty, is teaching a 4 days/week load during the fall 2008 semester. According to the 15-Aug-08
version of the Registrar's schedule guide, Doty will be teaching two sections of human resource management
(MGT 364) and one section of management principles (MGT 300). The relevant portions of the schedule guide are
inserted below.
(August 25, 2008) Aberrant Doty The familiar Arthur Bedeian “Dean’s Disease” epigraphs accompanying various
installments of USMNEWS.net’s CoB News series were especially appropriate on 19 August 2008. That excerpt
(shown below from CoB News, 19 August 2008) spoke to the situation where former deans rejoin their faculty
years after last engaging in their own academic/scholarly pursuits only to find that things have changed
significantly over the years. As Bedeian explains, some former deans can’t overcome the disconnectedness that
has occurred, and they begin to exhibit aberrant forms of behavior.
(August 29, 2008) CoB News, 2 September 2008 “Welcome to the Jungle . . .” Just 12 days after a USM document
revealed former CoB dean Harold Doty’s 4-day/week, 3 course, 2 prep fall 2008 teaching load, and only five days
after an updated version of that same USM document showed how that teaching load worsened for Doty, the USM
Registrar’s Office has released another fall 2008 schedule update showing that the end of 2008 will likely be
remembered by Doty for quite some time. According to that update (relevant portion shown below), Doty’s section
of MGT 300 has grown again, this time by almost 2%, while his “re-opened” section of MGT 364 has since (over 5
days) grown by a whopping 17%.
