D. HAROLD DOTY, FORMER DEAN, COLLEGE OF
BUSINESS, CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT
TYLER
(May 27, 2008) 2007-2008 CoB Awards Another academic year draws to a close, it is time to look back and salute some
of the CoB faculty members would will not otherwise get their just rewards. The following is a list of the major awards:
(June 2, 2008) CoB Flashback: January 18, 2007 January 18, 2007, was a sad day for the USM family. As Rachel Leifer of
The Hattiesburg American reported on January 19, 2007, the USM community awoke on January 18, 2007, to the sad
news that then-Dean of USM's College of Arts & Letters, Elliott Pood, had died of a massive heart attack the previous
evening, January 17, 2007. As Leifer strolled the USM campus on January 18, 2007, looking for words of condolence
and/or wisdom from USM faculty, staff and students, she ran across Harold Doty, then-Dean of USM's College of
Business. Doty must have seemed to Leifer like the perfect person to talk to; after all Doty and Pood both came to USM
at the same time (2003) and both had been serving as colleagues/Deans since then.
(June 5, 2008) CoB News, 4 June 2008 Doty Gone Wild? According to a USMNEWS.NET source, CoB management
professor Harold Doty recently e-mailed CoB students enrolled in a section of MGT 400 and informed the students that
the particular section of MGT 400 had been "canceled by the university." Doty's message was cryptic at best, and
offered no explanation to the students nor any instructions on what to do about their course schedules.
(June 5, 2008) CoB Flashback: June 28, 2004 June 28, 2004, was a significant day in the life of the CoB. On that day
former Director of Development for the CoB, Frank Pickering, walked into the Forrest County Circuit Court and fired a
wrongful termination of employment lawsuit against USM et al. Pickering alleged that he had been wrongfully
terminated on or about October 2003, and his lawsuit mentioned former CBA and CoB deans William Gunther and
Harold Doty, respectively.
(June 18, 2008) Perks for Buds VII Centers The CoB must be in the top tier of business schools for the number of
“centers” that are meaningless. Under ousted dean Doty, he wanted to virtually litter the CoB with them. The idea
would be they would all be – somehow – revenue generators. This is where it got fuzzy, and for the most part, ceased to
exist as a concept. The true reason for centers or bureaus is to benefit the director or directors of the centers, and to hide
salaries, benefits, work loads, cash flows, and anything else that is not desired to be seen in the light of day.personal
finance issues into the County’s regular education curriculum.
