D. HAROLD DOTY, FORMER DEAN, COLLEGE OF
BUSINESS, CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT
TYLER
(December 5, 2007) What's the Shelf-Life of Apologies in the CoB? by Duane Cobb It might be surprising to hear,
but it has been a year since EFIB Chairman George Carter issued a public "apology" to then-CoB Dean Harold Doty
for a variety of disparaging statements Carter had made about about the young Dean. As Carter had put it, Doty
was a nightmare to work for. Carter said that he (Carter) could remain in Doty's presence only for a minute or two
before he (Carter) felt the need to exit the room, otherwise he (Carter) might say something to Doty that would be
regrettable.
(December 16, 2007) Doty's Tipping Point: 2005-06 Duane Harold Doty's administration of USM's College of
Business spanned from the summer of 2003 through early April of 2007. It was characterized by ups and downs --
mostly downs -- and it ended suddenly, with USM Human Resources officials sending an e-mail to CoB
faculty/staff on the morning of 10-April-07 announcing that Doty and his Associate Dean, Farhang Niroomand, had
resigned the previous afternoon. Speculation about the reason for the resignations was rampant throughout
Greene Hall. The CoB had only recently been assigned to a 6th Year Review by the AACSB, and many felt that
decision must have played a role. Still to this day no complete explanation of the events of 9-April-07 have been
given to CoB students, faculty and staff.
(December 28, 2007) Dear USM Pride, Your recent report entitled "Doty's Tipping Point: 2005-06" failed to mention
that it was in August of 2005 that George H. Carter III was placed at the top of the EFIB again. This would prove to
be one of Doty's larger blunders, though I'm not sure it surpasses any of the three your report mentioned. Each of
those was prominent in Doty's failure as a Dean.
(January 9, 2008) Saunders Like Thames, Doty by Duane Cobb After watching all of the new Student Powered
Videos at usm.edu, it was interesting to see that USM chose to air (on local television) one featuring new President
Martha Saunders playing piano and continuing to wear out the borrowed "ride all the rides" phrase. The "USM
family" got a steady dose of such self-promotion from former President Shelby Thames, so it seems now as though
nothing much has changed.
(January 26, 2008) CoB at a Crossroads PART 2 The Doty Era: Hubris, Intemperance, and Farhang Unleashed The
biggest influence on where the CoB is today, January of 2008, has been Duane Harold Doty's tenure as Dean of the
College -- a period that ran from 2003-2007, and ended with Doty's shocking resignation on 9-April-07. Doty's first
appearance in the business college at USM came during the Spring of 2003, when he was selected as a finalist for
Dean's opening in USM's newly formed College of Business & Economic Development. The previous business
Dean, William Gunther, had been fired by then-President Shelby F. Thames in January of 2003. Upon firing
Gunther, Thames reorganized the business college, adding new departments/units, such as economic
development, fashion merchandising, and tourism management.
