D. HAROLD DOTY, FORMER DEAN, COLLEGE OF
BUSINESS, CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT
TYLER
(November 12, 2007) GH Chatter From all of the chatter surrounding the 2007-08 P&T season, the proceedings in
the CAC are going to be exciting. One or more CAC members in each department have withheld voting at the
departmental level in order to join the fray at the College (CAC) level.
(November 12, 2007) CoB Power Line A Look at Who Holds the Reigns of Power in the CoB by Duane Cobb The
CoB has devolved into such an academic banana republic of sorts that it is probably useful to take stock, from time
to time, of just who holds the most political power there. Without question political power in the CoB waxes and
wanes, just as it does in any of the typical unstable, tin pot hot spots around the globe. That's what updates are for.
(December 3, 2007) Finance's "UofAL Moratorium" Ends Last Vestiges of Doty's Draconian Policy Eliminated with
Hiring of Goodwin Shortly after taking over as Dean of USM's College of Business and Economic Development in
the summer of 2003, D. Harold Doty issued (verbally) a moratorium in the EFIB on hiring applicants holding PhDs
from the University of Alabama. As sources have stated, under Doty's policy, simply holding a PhD from UofAL
was enough to eliminate a candidate from consideration, even if the candidate in question was ranked highly by a
finance faculty search committee. And, the reason or reasons for such a policy were never fully/thoroughly
articulated by Doty.
(December 4, 2007) Special Report Dean ME An Examination of CoB Deans’ Merit Raises over the Past 15 Years
The revelation that Interim CoB Dean Alvin Williams is working on a contract that is paying him $175,000/year
came as a shock to many readers of USMNEWS.NET. After more than a decade of turning down offers to lead
USM’s College of Business, it seems to many now that Williams’ past decisions were all about money. Given
readers’ response to reports about Williams’ current salary, USMNEWS.NET reporters have searched our archives
and found data (for the past 15 years) on the merit raises that the CoB’s Deans, past and present, have “awarded
themselves.” Some of the results are a bit a surprising.
(December 5, 2007) What's the Shelf-Life of Apologies in the CoB? by Duane Cobb It might be surprising to hear,
but it has been a year since EFIB Chairman George Carter issued a public "apology" to then-CoB Dean Harold Doty
for a variety of disparaging statements Carter had made about about the young Dean. As Carter had put it, Doty
was a nightmare to work for. Carter said that he (Carter) could remain in Doty's presence only for a minute or two
before he (Carter) felt the need to exit the room, otherwise he (Carter) might say something to Doty that would be
regrettable.
