Harold had barely moved into the Dean's office at USM when he began looking for a new job. Seemingly oblivious to
the fact that his interview was being recorded for publication on the school's website, he embarrassed himself, and
needless to say, didn't get the job. In April 2008, Harold and his associate dean, Farhang Niroomand, abruptly
returned to their first love of teaching. Gossip flew that Farhang had sexually harassed one of the staff and Harold
covered up for him. When it come to light, according to Patty Munn, instructor of accounting, both were invited to step
down. Over the next year or so, each made finding a new administrative position a full time job. Harold is now at
University of Texas at Tyler and Farhang is at the University of Houston - Victoria.
George Carter, former chairman of the former Economics, Finance and International Business Department at USM
said what a lot of current and former faculty thought. The difference -- Carter managed to get himself recorded.
“I can’t be in his presence more than just a minute or two before I have to get away before I say something I shouldn’t
. . . It’s just something about him . . . it’s who he is. And, to me, he’s not somebody I want to be around. . . I can’t take
him.... Fortunately, [CoB Associate Dean] Farhang [Niroomand] is a person I can work with real well, . . . so as an
administrator, things can get done. If it were me having to work with the Dean [D. Harold Doty], I couldn’t do this job.
I can’t walk into his office. I just can’t."
Don't believe me? Well just listen.
While Harold was at USM (and since), usmnews.net generated a vast library about him. Take a look and tell us your
own experiences.
"The fun money is private money. At Southern Miss,
I've got state dollars and I've got Foundation dollars.
It's real easy to tell them apart. I tell people I've got two
checkbooks. I've got my booze account and my
non-booze account. Out of the state money I'm pretty
constrained what in I can do. ... Foundation dollars,
that's when I take my money out of my booze account,
I can pretty much do anything I want with it." D.
