(July 30, 2006) (updated July 31, 2006) The Alternate Route to Tenure in the CoB Most USM faculty think that the route to tenure at the institution is paved with scholarship, service, and instruction, or as they are usually known: teaching, research, and service. "USM faculty face a "six-year" tenure clock, meaning that individuals must usually apply for tenure during their sixth year of employment at USM. The USM Faculty Handbook provides the possibility of a one year extension, pending approval by the faculty member's chairman, dean, and provost. (July 11, 2007) 31st & Pearl Black Knew Then What We Know Now So many CBA faculty thought it completely silly that, during the Ty Black administration of the college, faculty had to submit actual copies of their scholarship at annual review time. The running joke was that it was bush league, that reputable schools don't operate in that way. Well, Black knows people, at least CoB (then CBA) people, as good as or better than most. That belief was supported last week when it was announced that new CoB faculty Sami Dakhlia (assistant professor of economics) and Akbar Marvasti (associate professor of economics) were applying for promotions this year. While USMNEWS.NET reporters continue to follow these and others who are expected to submit their dossiers for P&T next month, there are already at least three controversial P&T "issues" that will carry over into the 2007-08 P&T process. This report re-examines them.
(March 2, 2008) Breaking News "Member of Protected Group," Francis Daniel, to Exit -- LONG BEACH --The CoB's Department of Management and Marketing continues to take a pounding on the staffing front. Reporters at USMNEWS.NET have learned that assistant professor of management, Francis Daniel, has submitted his resignation from USM, effective at the end of the 2007-08 academic year. Daniel's departure represents the CoB's sixth consecutive departure from the MGT & MKT department, and follows the recent news that Michael Vest, Stephen Bushardt, Talai Osmonbekov, and Tony Henthorne are all leaving the CoB at the end of the 2007-08 academic year. In addition to these, assistant professor of management, Jon Carr, will depart before the end of 2008.
