(April 6, 2009) Cheaper by This Dozen Twelve Current CoB Faculty USM Dean Lance Nail Could Stand to Lose by Duane Cobb Picking up where my recent ranking of CoB faculty that CoB dean Lance Nail can’t afford to lose (Behind the 8) left off, this report ranks the top 12 current CoB faculty that dean Lance Nail can’t afford to have hang on for an extended period. That is, without these 12 CoB faculty, the CoB’s ranking amongst Gulf South business schools would certainly rise higher. Since this list is 50% longer than the last, let’s get right to it:
JOHN CLARK, FORMER ASSOCIATE
PROFESSOR OF FINANCE

(May 13, 2009) Five CoB Faculty Awarded Tenure for 2009-10 JACKSON – At the May-09 IHL Board meeting, set to occur tomorrow (13-May) and Thursday (14-May), five CoB faculty will be awarded tenure, which will begin in the 2009-10 academic year. These individuals are John Clark (FIN), Fujun Lai (DS), Farooq Malik (FIN), Lance Nail (FIN), and Michael Wittmann (MKT).
(May 19, 2009) GH Chatter The 2008-09 tenure class was certainly a motley bunch. About the only one not surrounded by controversy is Fujun Lai of decision sciences. Chatter has it that John Clark's (FIN) tenure faced some behind-the-scenes opposition from the first floor (of JAG) of all places. Clark is known for maintaining a "relaxed" work schedule, to put it mildly. His relatively new FIN colleague, the newly tenured Farooq Malik, has also developed the reputation of coming in to teach and then leaving (the JAG). Chatter has it that Malik is as much "the ghost" as anyone else in the CoB. As for the remaining non-administrative member of the 2008-09 tenure class, some are surprised to see that Michael Wittmann is teaching a full load this summer. Chatter has it that those who hold distinguished professorships, like Wittmann, should instead be engaged in research during the summers.
(May 28, 2009) Promotions to h4 It's nearly impossible to have studied the CoB of the last few years and not have noticed how administrators there have perfected use of the "early promotion" to guarantee tenure later.
(June 9, 2009) Is John Clark Leaving the CoB? CoB associate professor of finance John Clark appears to be on his way out of USM's b-school. Clark's house is currently listed for sale on DeLois Smith's website, and stories have now begun circulating that he has taken new employment elsewhere. The departure of Clark would not only confirm sources' prediction that Clark would leave the CoB within the next few years, it would also mean that the CoB's finance unit has been squeezed to the limit.
(June 10, 2009) Clark Checking Out After an extensive USMNEWS.net investigation, it appears as though CoB associate professor of finance John Clark is headed to the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Interestingly, Clark was hired by the CoB in 2003, after a tenure-track run at UMKC that began in the late 1990s.
