(June 18, 2008) Special Report A Bird's Nest on the Ground An Investigative Series on the Use of the CoB for Personal Gain The recent release of the CoB's new journal classifications is sure to lead to a number of interesting reports here at USMNEWS.NET. The analysis of the MKT journal rankings revealed a number of issues with the 2007-08 CoB journal ranking process that was chaired by untenured assistant professor of economics, Sami Dakhlia. Also part of that process was untenured assistant professor of marketing, Michael Wittmann. This Special Report takes a look at how the journals that have published Wittmann's past work were ranked by the CBA of the mid-1990s, and how that ranking was changed by Dakhlia, Wittmann and the other members of the CoB's journal ranking committee. A similar analysis of untenured associate professor of finance John Clark's publications is also presented here.
(June 18, 2008) Perks for Buds VII Centers The CoB must be in the top tier of business schools for the number of “centers” that are meaningless. Under ousted dean Doty, he wanted to virtually litter the CoB with them. The idea would be they would all be – somehow – revenue generators. This is where it got fuzzy, and for the most part, ceased to exist as a concept. The true reason for centers or bureaus is to benefit the director or directors of the centers, and to hide salaries, benefits, work loads, cash flows, and anything else that is not desired to be seen in the light of day.personal finance issues into the County’s regular education curriculum.
(July 1, 2008) CoB News, 1 July 2008 "If Corky were Clark . . ." A Commentary by Duane Cobb Recent news reports stated that three athletics coaches at USM were awarded contract extensions by central administrators in USM's Athletics Department. These are Larry Eustachy (head coach, men's basketball), Joye Lee McNelis (head coach, women's basketball) and Corky Palmer (head coach, baseball). One particular item in these reports was striking to me. That item was Palmer's base salary, just a bit over $100,000 per year. My first reaction was "That's (Palmer's salary) several thousand less than John Clark's (salary)." In case you're wondering, Clark is an associate professor of finance in the CoB. He earns around $110,000 per year. Palmer's USM baseball teams win 40+ games each year, and participate in NCAA Regionals. All Clark does is publish in marketing journals. Where's the justice in those salary figures?
(July 6, 2008) "What You Talking 'Bout, William?" CoB Continues to Make Negative Impression on General Public Some say that if you look at the various "Centers" in a Tier IV business school you'll find that school's worst faculty. According to sources, the CoB (a Tier IV business school) is not an exception to that "rule." The Bureau of Business and Economic Research is directed by William Gunther, the only non-AQ faculty in economics at USM. Gunther's assistant in the BBER is Edward Ranck, whose credentials are essentially a mystery to most CoB faculty. Inside the BBER is the Center for Economic Education, which is directed by Susan Doty, an instructor in economics who does not hold any real economics credentials and who is the wife of former CoB dean, Harold Doty. Then there is the CoB's Center for Financial Services, which is directed by associate professor of finance, John Clark. According to insiders, Clark is arguably the CoB's best example of the kind of "do-nothing" college professor that so many in the Hattiesburg area criticize. If you pass by the first floor CFS, you are likely to find a dark, empty room.
