(December 13, 2006) Letter to the Editor on George Carter's Use of USM facilities in a Private Business I was
shocked to read Lee Gore's letter approving George Carter's use of University inter-net and mail facilities for
private business purposes. Now that we know that these two resources are available for operating a private
business on campus, why don't we ask Mr. Gore for an opinion on a variety of other possible uses? Examples
would include--(1) Is it permissible for faculty to use a university vehicle for private business drop-offs and
deliveries? (2) Can faculty install business software on university computers so that they can generate
bookkeeping, tax, etc. output for their businesses? (3) Would listing of a university telephone number for
receiving business calls be permissible?
(December 14, 2006) 31st & Pearl “Makin’ Their Way, the Only Way They Know How” Thanks to EFIB chairman
George Carter, we have now identified some of the CoB’s “good ole boys.” Those boys have been busy this year.
As we look back on the year of the “Letter of Agreement,” we must admit that our first guess about what the
group wants for management professor David Duhon was a little off.
(December 14, 2006) Lost In Translation? One of the most enlightening contributions from the USM-No Quarter!
Message Board (formerly known as the USM AAUP Message Board, formerly known as FireShelby.com) was the
innovative series of translated documents authored by various USM administrators. Translation was achieved
via a proprietary translation program known as WindTalkers. The authors of the WindTalkers program have
generously agreed to use the newest version of their software to help us read between the lines of a recent
memorandum sent by CoB dean Harold Doty to EFIB chair George Carter. Original text appears in black font,
while translations appear in blue. Other factual/opinion material (added after the WindTalkers translation was
completed) appears in red.
