(November 12, 2007) CoB Power Line A Look at Who Holds the Reigns of Power in the CoB by Duane Cobb The CoB has devolved into such an academic banana republic of sorts that it is probably useful to take stock, from time to time, of just who holds the most political power there. Without question political power in the CoB waxes and wanes, just as it does in any of the typical unstable, tin pot hot spots around the globe. That's what updates are for.
(November 16, 2007) Backstage Pass A Look at How "EFIB Dominance" is Impacting Academic Quality in the CoB For a number of years, the CoB's core curriculum has included ECO 336, or international economics. Some of the CoB's economists have argued that globalization trends demand that the CoB's students be exposed to a course in international economics, and for years now, they have been. At the same time there have also been small factions among the CoB faculty that have argued for an option in the core curriculum that allows students to use the international course in each major (e.g., international management, etc.) to fulfill this "international" portion of the CoB's core. Whenever these factions raised a voice, the economists would attempt to hush that voice as quickly as possible. To do otherwise would reduce the number of student credit hours taught by the CoB's economists -- a situation that would ultimately threaten the size and composition of that group.
(November 19, 2007) How the EFIB's "Quick-Strike Promotion & Raise" Program Works Much has been written about the EFIB's so-called "Quick-Strike Promotion and Raise" program. It is perhaps best explained by the following anecdote. According to sources, in his 2007 P&T support letters for Dakhlia and Akbar Marvasti, EFIB Chairman George Carter stated that Dakhlia and Marvasti were hired at lower ranks because the salary lines lacked the funding necessary to bring them in at more appropriate ranks, such as associate and full professor. (Carter's pointed his finger at various USM administrators for the employment line shortfall.) Thus, these two new hires were brought in at lower ranks and put into "the . . . program."
(December 5, 2007) What's the Shelf-Life of Apologies in the CoB? by Duane Cobb It might be surprising to hear, but it has been a year since EFIB Chairman George Carter issued a public "apology" to then-CoB Dean Harold Doty for a variety of disparaging statements Carter had made about about the young Dean. As Carter had put it, Doty was a nightmare to work for. Carter said that he (Carter) could remain in Doty's presence only for a minute or two before he (Carter) felt the need to exit the room, otherwise he (Carter) might say something to Doty that would be regrettable.
(December 5, 2007) Carter's Targets A Compendium The recent "look back" at EFIB Chair George Carter's disparaging remarks about former CoB Dean Harold Doty, and Carter's public "apology" that followed, has sparked interest from USMNEWS.NET readers for additional information. One piece of information came recently by way of an audio clip of Carter describing his disgust at the thought of a Doty Administration of the CoB. Aside from that audio, and others like it, perhaps nothing could go further to meet readers' requests that "Carter's Targets: A Compendium," which is being brought to you by reporters at USMNEWS.NET.
