(August 2, 2008) 31st & Pearl Could Tyrone Black Rebuild the CoB? Long-time readers of USMNEWS.net probably think that my answer to the question posed by the title of this column is a resounding"No," given the depths to which the CoB has sunk in recent memory. Had I asked this question via a 31st & Pearl column six weeks or so ago, such thoughts would probably be right on.
(August 7, 2008) Reporters Right On Ranking "the Greatest Ever" Scholars in the CoB by Duane Cobb When it comes to ranking "the greatest ever" scholars in CoB history, almost all of the work has already been done. The reporters who produced "the greatest ever" series for USMNEWS.net did a good job of making a case for the three top scholars who worked in USM's business school at one time or another. That case was so good that the only thing left for me to do was choose the "Close Call" recipient, whose name will appear later in this essay.
(August 12, 2008) CoB News, 12 August 2008 Meet Ty Black With all of the reports about the "the greatest ever" CoB faculty, and what former USM b-school dean, Tyrone Black, did to assemble such an impressive faculty roster, reporters at USMNEWS.net thought that Black's general academic qualifications might have gotten lost in the mix. Black earned his PhD from Tulane University, which is ranked by U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2008 as the 50th best national university in the United States.
(January 12, 2009) GH Chatter How do all of the CoB's (permanent) deans compare against one-another? A recent chatter held the following ranking: (1) Ty Black, (2) Lance Nail, (3) Bill Gunther, (4) Joe Greene, and (5) Harold Doty. It's interesting that Nail would already rank second to some. It's no surprise, however, that Harold Doty brings up the rear.
(March 9, 2009) 31st & Pearl Unstreetable Kettle & Pot The recent USMNEWS.net reports and editorials on William Gunther's opining, in his official capacity as director of the CoB's Bureau of Business & Economic Research, for $800 billion economic stimulus proposals has us pining for the days when former CBA dean Tyrone Black closed up the Bureau the first time around. Black knew what former CoB dean Harold Doty didn't, and what current dean Lance Nail appears not to, and that is that any business bureau in USM's b-school is a use (waste) of resources meant only to cushion the existence of favored CoBers. In this case it's Gunther, and his associate Ed Ranck.
(May 27, 2009) No Corky in the CoB Another year, another trip to the NCAA Regionals for the USM baseball team. This one (2009), however, was an improbable trip that came courtesy of USM's recent 3-win, 1-loss C-USA tournament. Yes, Corky Palmer's Golden Eagles took down Tulane twice and national power East Carolina once en route to the championship game against former NCAA champ Rice. That game, a close 6-8 loss to the Owls, also helped clinch the Eagles' 2009 trip into the NCAAs. Clearly, Corky Palmer is the crown jewel of USM's athletics department.
