CHERLYNN BECKER, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FORMER
CHAIRMAN, DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM MANAGEMENT
(February 6, 2007) What Does Cheri Becker Do All Day? Back in 2005, Cheri Becker hit USM’s CoB with a splash
as the candidate for the chairman position for Tourism Management who was rejected by Jay Grimes and Shelby
Thames but who was hired anyway after Harold Doty encouraged Becker to pursue (or threaten to pursue) a
discrimination claim. Rumor has it that Joe Hutchinson (former Associate Professor of Hospitality Management at
the USMGC campus) had some prior experience with Becker at Virginia Tech and had serious concerns about
her suitability for the position. Hutchinson voiced these concerns to Grimes, who blocked Becker’s candidacy,
leading to Doty’s discrimination ploy. Grimes and Thames caved to the pressure and Becker began work at USM
in April of 2005. Just what does Becker do all day? Let’s take a look at her 2006-07 academic year activities.
(April 18, 2007) TM News, April 2007 The recent announcement that marketing professor Tony Henthorne will
become the new Chair of the CoB's Tourism Management Department in the fall of 2007 isn't the only news item
coming out of that department these days. It is, however, one of the most surprising, since Henthorne's (see
below) area is marketing, not tourism management.
(May 24, 2007) Money, Money, Money, Money Consulting and Paid Service in USM’s College of Business This
report examines the consulting and paid service that faculty in the CoB are performing, at least according their
own SEDONA files (as of May 2007). As you will see below, some of the CoB’s least research-active faculty are
engaging in significant amounts of consulting and paid service, all of which enhances their (in some cases
bloated) USM salaries. At the bottom of each consulting/paid service bio below, we provide salary data for
2006-07 along with a projected salary for 2007-08. Enjoy.
(August 21, 2007) Tourism Management News, 21 August 2007 We have a number of interesting news items to
report from the Tourism Management Department as we begin the 2007-08 academic year. A few of these are
detailed below.
