(February 27, 2007) Research Records of Departing Marketing Faculty When the news broke on 26-Feb-2007 that three
marketing professors were departing the CoB, many wondered what marketing's future prospects were as a result. The news
is not so good for marketing, as this brief report indicates.
(March 26, 2007) "Out of the Frying Pan . . ." What is Laurie Babin Walking Into at UL-M? Just a few short weeks ago
usmnews.net broke the story that three marketing faculty -- Barry and Laurie Babin, and Tara Lopez -- resigned from USM's
College of Business effective at the end of spring 2007. Each of these three had accepted an offer with a Louisiana-based
institution (Louisiana Tech University, University of Louisiana, Monroe, and Southeastern Louisiana University, respectively)
and will be headed west in just a few short weeks.
(April 3, 2007) Heroes and Storytellers In a recent usmnews.net report, readers were treated to some of Management Professor
Stephen Bushardt’s views on rewards, specifically the Hero/Storyteller Culture. This columnist began thinking about exactly
who the Heroes and Storytellers currently are in the CoB and who might be next. Remember that Heroes aren’t really heroes;
they are simply the individuals who are the poster children for how the corrupt Bushardtian Establishment wants things done.
As a word of note, there is a third category added – Hybrid – that denotes individuals who are used in different situations at
different times. What follows is a best guess list for each category.
(April 21, 2007) 31st & Pearl "The Bride of Chucky" Management & Marketing Chairman Barry Babin is kickin. some tails on the
way out of the 'burg. With less than one month remaining on his final USM contract, Babin is handing out one bad faculty annual
evaluation after another. In doing so, he.s showing them all how he really feels about them, and it ain't good.
(April 22, 2007) Babin’s Revenge It started last summer. It carried through the last school year. It culminated with the 2006 annual
evaluations. What is it? It’s Barry Babin’s Revenge. Babin, the marketing professor who arrived at USM in 1990, spent quite a bit
of his time publishing academic research in mostly quality journals, though he never generated massive numbers or consistent
dominance of top-tier journals. How was he able to do so? Well, his ties to Joseph Hair and other marketing academics didn’t
hurt his chances at advancement. It shouldn’t be insinuated that Babin didn’t work hard, just that he has had the wheels greased
more than the average person. After working his academic connections to his advantage, Babin was still a fairly well-known
academic at a Tier III school in USM.
